Sump guard invalidating insurance
I phoned my insurance company (Privilege) today to tell them I'd got a set of 18" alloys for my D4 with all terrain tyres and swapped them over as required.
No problem they said - and no charge. Just a change of alloys.
Just before ending the call, I said - by the way, can you add the sump guard I've put on (recently purchased from RLD).
This apparently is an insurance refusal. So now I either have to remove it or change insurance companies for a mod which actually reduces the risk to the insurance company (as it reduced the likelihood of major damage to the car either on or off road).
It does strike me as somewhat bizarre and I wondered what others' experience was..... 1981 Unimog U1300L (ex German Army vehicle

Never had an issue with sump guard. Try APlan or Adrian Flux.
Lv accepted my sump guard but I've now changed to aplan and everything is covered including Offroad and green LanesMark.

A sump guard is also a genuine LR accessory. The LR one is made by Mantec, not RLD, but from an insurance point of view there's no difference.
I'd want to speak to an underwriter at Privilege. I suspect it just wasn't on the "script" that the person you spoke to uses, so they refused it.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Admiral were initially unsure about such things as it was obviously off script. I had to get a written letter from one of the underwriters there to get it cleared up in the end, took a few days of speaking to people who knew nothing about sump guards to get through to someone of use.

It's really unfortunate I only renewed about 6 weeks ago.
The sump guard was actually on their list of insurance exclusions, rather than items they should refer to their underwriters.
I was insured with them last year & they wanted upwards of £500, but by going through a comparison website I halved that - and stayed with the same company. Damn scam..... 1981 Unimog U1300L (ex German Army vehicle

A Plan is awesome but pricey
I gave them a try last month and they were quite a bit more pricey than everywhere else. About £300 more than all the others.
They certainly seemed well geared up to deal with kitted out D3's but sadly the price, for me, didn't justify it this time.

Anything not standard factory specification is treated by Privilege as a modification. And I have notified mine of Uncle Ray's wheel protector
"You must tell us what modifications you intend to make and obtain our agreement prior to making them. Modifications are changes to your car’s standard specification, including optional extras. These include, but are not restricted to, changes to the appearance and/or the performance of your car (including wheels, suspension, bodywork and engine).
Failure to provide correct information or inform us of any changes could adversely affect your policy, including invalidating your policy or claims being rejected or not fully paid".
It also includes "changes made to the car by the previous owner(s)" which is a bit of a tall order to find out.
