Stupid Sat Nav

I know there have been many posts on here but for the first time since installing my new 2009/10 Sat Nav CD I had cause to use it in anger

I assumed that by doing an upgrade from a 2006 to a 2009/10 version it would be a lot better.

NO IT AINT.

Was going from Glos to Bristol Airport - first issue, the only listings for the airport on the POI were in something like finnish (I have selected UK English when setting up). Then selecting Motorway as preferred route was painful, it must have changed. Anyway, got there in the end.

It got me to the M5 which was all goodness. Then proceeded to try to take me off every bleeding exit from Glos to Bristol - I had this with previous Disk. Anyway, I ignored it until Bristol and then for some dumb Censored reason decided to let it guide me. I was early and curious

It did get me there but what a conveluted way - all thru parts of the city and ended up near Clifton. I know you can go this way but not the best.

On the way back I switched the stupid woman off and followed the signs

Return journey was 20 mins shorter.

Think the makers must be in conjunction with the petrol companies

I should have saved the money I spent on a pucker disk and bought the latest Garmin or Tom Tom. Mad

My own car has built in system and is brilliant

It is very poor.

On the way back from Bala it took me down the A34 (after I told it not to take me to london (I live near Southampton and going via the M25 is about 100 miles further!).

So A34 - all good and sensible, until we got to the M4 junction where it decided that rather than continuing down the A34 I should divert and drive through Newbury town centre and then rejoin the A34 about 8 miles further down. Obviously I ignored it, but there are times when I don't know where I am going and I know that if I am following the Sat Nav it will take me obscure routes.

I am using the 2009 / 2010 disc.

I have a TomTom in my car and it's sooooooo much better and about a 10th of the cost.

And that is why the Wife takes her TomTom in the RRS if she is going anywhere as she dosn't trust the routes the RRS sat nav generates.
The estimated journey time on the RRS is also way too short. Plus the fact that the wife knows I like to take convoluted routes to get anywhere so she won't let me program the sat nav as I tell it to avoid motorways Whistle

mine (09 disk) ignores the A34 completely until you are on it. From home in brum to southampton, its got to be the A34 as primary route - no, M40, M25, M3, or M5, M4, M25, M3 - anything but the A34.

I know what you mean. It doesn't like the A34 at all, and as you say it's the only obvious route.

I've only got 1 way point stored on my sat nav and it's for the A34 to the west of Newbury, just to force it to go the sensible way.

I think the Sat Nav was invented by my wife, she navigates around london (in the car) by using a tube map and tube stations!

Between posting the last message and now my 2010 nav disk arrived and has been installed, once the screen cleared I was tossed out the car and the wife is away for a run so never got to see what options are on it yet Shocked Thank goodness it defaults to Belgium Whistle

There was me thinking it was just my LR Satnav that was carp!

The observation about the system wanting to constantly take me off a perfectly direct and fast A road onto minor routes is something I experience regularly. Half tempted to can it in favour of a TomTom...

Strange. I've used my LR SatNav extensively in UK & Europe and, apart from a very few times, it always appears to take me on the correct roads. I do check the routes against maps too (and the wifes TomTom)

Mine would never let me stay on a motorway in Austria - eventually twigged that the sat nav considered it to be a 'toll road' as you need a sticker to show that you have paid for the motorway. Turned off the 'avoid toll road' option and it was fine.

The preferences are very fickle. I have taken off the 'prefer motorway' option as it will then avoid logical A roads and find a motorway rroute somehow. With that option off I can do Glasgow to Dundee without going through Edinburgh.

If you take time to fiddle it can be OK. Except in Leeds. I always get lost in Leeds. Every time.

To be honest, I've only ever had one problem with it...so it works for me.
