Stop/Start

Considering a new disco, but put off buy the inclusion of the stupid stop/start "feature" Sad on all models.

Anybody got this and successfully disabled it?

Hairy Dan made some comments about it eariier when he got his new D4. I seem to recall that he too was a sceptic at first but warmed to the system after a few days. He persuaded me anyhow (easily led or what Laughing )

It can be switched off each time you start up but resets every time the ignition is used.

In theory there is no reason why it cannot be disabled in the CCF. Other markets, such as Australia, do not have it enabled.

I was going to try to disable it myself when I had access to an MY14 but time was against me.

Well we are 6000+ mile into Stop/Start and I was totally worried about it when we got it and wondered about cancelling the order based on horror stories I'd heard.

Well after 6000+ miles I can report I no longer notice it really or care Rolling Eyes

It's not that bad, you can control it by feathering the brakes at junctions and the only time I have found myself switching it off completely is in stop start motorway traffic.

It really isn't that bad it doesn't seem to kick in that often Thumbs Up

Thanks chaps Thumbs Up

Pretty sure it is a marketing addition rather than an engineering one, so it will be a kludge which has been poorly thought through. I have a friend who had severe battery problems as a result of this on a far eastern hatchback. It was a Censored car but that doesn't mean that LR have thought it through any better. Whistle

However the process of switching it off every trip doesn't sound so bad and if there is a possibility of a permanent solution then even better. 8)

It only has to work long enough to get the lower tax.

It turns itself off if the battery gets at all low.

As others have, I've found it grew on me and I usually have it on all the time now. The engine is very quick to restart when it's engaged and it really isn't a problem. The only thing it could do with is an on/off switch on the steering wheel; reaching down into the depths to switch it on/off - as is required at the moment - is a PITA.

It is on there to reduce the vehicle emissions/fuel consumption as manufacturers have to improve their figures, and making only 4x4's makes it hard for LR, as it is not only based on vehicles but the impact of a manufacturer's overall product range/output IIRC. So Land Rover are at a major disadvantage to say Toyota who can offset their overall range average emissions etc with Prius, LEAF etc.

Had it on the F2, now on Renault that replaced it, you get used to it. Only time it is a problem is if you want a quick getaway at the lights. I wouldn't cancel an order on the basis of it. Doubtless it will be mandatory on all cars soon anyway.

I do wonder what effects if any it has on the engine. Starter and electrics have to be beefed up to cope with massive increase in stop/start cycles, but can't seeing it doing the engine any favours longer term (i.e. outside of warranty Rolling Eyes )

I hired a D4 with stop..start, and got the impression that it didn't stop....if the air con was on.

At least, there were occasions when it kept ticking over at junctions and it seemed to be whenever I had air con switched on. I rationalised the engine needed to keep running to maintain temp control. .???

I hated the thought of stop/start, but its actually quite good, and you can control/stop the car "stopping" through use of the brake pedal Thumbs Up

4 years and 48000 miles with it and it hasn't caused me any problems (yet). It saves fuel each time the engine is stopped for over 3 seconds and there are numerous factors that will prevent it from stopping the engine.

Looking on the bright side it has reduced the Vehicle Excise Duty by about £180 over non Stop Start models of the Discovery.

As Bill says I was very sceptical about it at first but as everybody else has said you don't really notice it working now, you can control it by not pressing hard on the brake pedal at junctions and it will not awitch off or will restart if it senses the battery is getting low. It also has a second battery fitted just for the start/stop so some thought has gone into the implementation. I actually have a Nanocom but haven't really bothered looking into disabling it as it's not such a big deal, to me anyway Thumbs Up

Every time the stop/start function cycles the engine is started (of course).

When the starter motor turns the engine there is initially no oil pressure - what effect will stop/start have on the length of life of the engine, starter motor & batteries?

Does the stop/start kick in before the engine reaches operating temperature, or is it only operative after the engine has reached normal operating temperature?
