doing this on Start Stop D4 is a bitch from access perspective by the looks of things, and top access is very limited, any pointers peeps as i have had rattle going over sort of corrugated surface and looks as if UJ is shot
Access to bottom bolt OK top one a bitch. I have never taken wheel arch out on D4 would that give more access to top bolt? or am I ripping all Censored around secondary battery?

Kind regards
Greg

Doubt your problem is lower steering uj, try ĺubrication on it first, more like worn bushes, anti-roll bar or rear lower fronts.
DAB on the brakes at 5-10 mph if you get a bump it's bushes.

It will when others won't,

i checked all bushes with pray bar and they all solid but moving lower UJ side to side produces loud knock which does not happen when i shake holding steering rack shaft so lower column is shot

and the knock sounds like old Vickers machine gun when braking gently on corrugated surface or even going over road lane reflectors / dividers Wink

normal brake test you mention does not produce knock (used to have lowers swapped on old bus but that was 98K not 42K)

I think got to remove aux small battery to remove tray to get to top bolt easier. ON D3 it was piece of cake Wink

Never come across that, is the wear actually in the UJ? Have you checked the clamp bolt is tight? Many lower UJs have been changed when in fact they only need the bolts tightening Thumbs Up
What about warranty?
I think you may have to remove more than the battery to gain access Big Cry

bolt tightened up still clonking on shake
I got old lower shaft from old bus which is the same

I will see how it goes about getting access but might be fun as always with LRs Wink

Guys
Not sure if anyone can help but I replaced the lower shaft as I was getting a slight knock through the steering when going off a kurb. I assume that when the top bolt is done up the top and bottom parts of the column should be locked solid. I have a little movement from side to side, like its piviting on the bolt. Did it up to 30Nm as recommended but still moves.

This has been reported a few times where people have used pattern parts, the yoke is too big for the shaft and will not tighten up correctly. If you over tighten the bolt it will deform the yoke but still not clamp the shaft correctly and if you snap the bolt you will have a great deal of fun getting it back off again.

Anybody know what is the difference between part numbers QMN500250 (old part No.) and new LR071147 ? They are priced very differently.

I just received a OEM part from a well known vendor, checked for play in the shaft that I’ve read about with these OEM parts and found 2 of the 4 rivets loose! All 4 were badly formed, looking like it was done with a hammer. Sent a complaint and should be getting another sent so I hope the next ones better.

Then I found my brake splash plate was goosed, one screw barely holding it on. Typically I thought I could weld in new washers until I realised it was bloody ally!!

Once again, thanks to all on this forum..... Mu steering had been getting heavy and notchy for a while now and I feared the worse. But gave the U/J a dousing of WD40 last night and it's light and free once more...

Fingers crossed that will do it for a while, otherwiseI'll be fitting a replacement.

Same here. Been driving for the last week with little to no power steering. Read multiple forums and considered replacing the entire steering system till I found this. Gave the UJ a good soaking of the good stuff, now I can steer the vehicle with one finger Laughing
