Steering Column Knock 06 model |
|
I have had a steering knock for some 3 weeks. Initially took it to the dealer (Stratestones Doncaster) before I was enlighten by the discovery of this website / forum & then the LR GTR site.
The dealer said they could not reproduce the knocking, trying to fob me off saying that it all seems normal when they drove it.
The knocking is exactly as per the TSB - Minor Steering column Knock on LR GTR.
BUT my concern is the VIN range on this TSB is upto 5A349378.
MY HSE reg: May06, has a vin of 6A36????, which is out of the scope of the TSB .
Q: has anybody else got the knocking but there VIN is after the TSB range ?(IE after 5A349378)

Andy welcome to the site
When does this knocking occur? 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

The knocking appears in 2 ways.
firstly, setting of from stationary, say a junction/roundabout. I feel a knock through the steering wheel. Feels like something is loose.
secondly when driving over small bumps or undulating/rough road surface again get the knock that feels like something loose.
The TS bulletin says the cause is "Dynamic movement in the lower steering shaft sliding joint due to low sliding loads." NOT being a techy person I don't fully understand this.
Cheers

Well it does sound very much like the rattle in the TSB ...I had my lower steering shaft replaced on Monday after experiencing a loose rattle whilst on stoney lanes during the Peaks weekend.
I produced a copy the TSB and my dealer did it without quibble didn't even mention VIN no's ...Just push them hard 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Well I haven't had an opportunity to take it off-road again as yet ...but as they confirmed that all replacement part have been fitted as per the inspection ref TSB ...then I'm not anticipating any further problems. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Hi AndyW - I had the same lower steering arm problem, and VIN is outside the range in the TSB, but was fixed under warranty by the dealer (with OK from LRA) with the new lower steering arm, and is great now - no more knocks on even the worst corrugations Why have I never felt this way about a 4WD before?

I've read about this before.
I've got the odd little shudder in the steering column when on corrugations, but nothing consistent and nothing more than I've experienced in other vehicles.
What is this 'steering knock' like??
Is it significant so that you'd know if you had it or not??
I'm half way to running out of warranty, so I'd just like some more info. Have a nice day!

Jamo - the knocking in our D3 was very noticeable on rougher ground, for example over paddocks we'd harrowed, or corrugated dirt roads. It sounds (and feels) as though the steering rod is missing any sort of cushioning on it's far end, giving a distinct steel on steel sort of knock, that feeds back through the steering wheel. The fix of replacing the lower steering arm completely fixes the problem. We just toured 9,000 kms of outback Qld over the last three weeks, and no knocking of any sort - except my head on the roof! Why have I never felt this way about a 4WD before?

Was reversing my D3 with almost full right lock (at normal height) & heard metallic scraping noise. Did not do it on left lock. Will give dealer a shout Monday.

Steering knock occured on dirt roads sounded like the steering had no damping.
Dealer replaced lower arms as in SB even though outside of vin nos.
no knock now fixed problem comletely. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
