Starting problem

Got into my D4 yesterday, smart key in pocket, pressed starter button - nothing. The battery was fine. The screens were on, just no ignition.

Went to get the other smart key, same problem. Keys lock and unlock vehicle, and the smart key was recognised as I could open the door from locked by pulling the door handle.

Called LR Assist, who were very helpful and said that a technician would be with me in an hour.

Locked vehicle, left for 5 minutes, unlocked - and all was reset and working fine, started immediately. So I called LR Assist to cancel.

So - always well worth a lock / wait / retry sequence if anything like this happens!

All I can add is when I had my D4 I was told to put my foot on the brake before starting the car! I have not tried anything different but it starts first time - yes and its with the key in my pocket!

Yes indeed - I was pressing the brake pedal of course!

If you don't press the brake pedal, normally the car will go into "ignition on" mode but not start.

In this instance, nothing happened at all, brake on or off.

Has happened to me once too - do you intend to do anything about it?

Happened to me twice very early on, but never recurred after the 2010 MS software patches assurance programme. Check your vehicle doesn't have any outstanding updates needed.

Seen this myself

This has happened to me twice now.

Once shortly after picking up the vehicle a month or so ago and again this past week. This last time, it did not turn on after two attempts. Made sure I was not trying to turn on/off the radio as I have done this a few times (why again are these buttons so close to one another).

Tried a third time and it turned over as normal.

It's a good thing mfg's are moving away from troublesome mechanical keys to something more reliable. Wink

Car is back from the dealers after having a look at this and fixing a few niggles.

Will wait and see if it happens again. Hopefully not ....

Ive just had my start/stop button replaced.
Sometimes it would not work at all to start or stop, other times you had to push it quite hard but most of the time it worked fine.
The dealer took a bit of convincing but 1 new switch later and all is well. Smile

Shocked The switch is not pressure sensitive?

What you have to remember is that when it's colder outside, the starting up process will take longer because it waits for the glo-plugs to heat up properly. SWMBO was the same as you, and as a result she thought it's not starting and tried pushing the button harder/longer and it worked, althou it was just that she'd held it a few seconds longer than normal.

So I recon at the next spell of cold weather you'll have the same with this new switch.

Well well, you don't say.................

I am aware the starter button is not a strain gauge but a make / break (I have a degree in electronics so understand the subtle difference) Whistle
The problem was the switch was not making contact, If you pressed very hard at the top of the button you could get it to work.
The dealer initially took the "treat the owner like an idiot" approach like you have done. I insisted I was not going to put the car in until they had a new switch in stock.
The switch as duly diagnosed to be at fault and was changed.
No problems since regardless of temperature Thumbs Up

Think that is putting it gently, the comment was out of order and not called for. MrH was just making an observation about the issue he had found. Thumbs Up

Gents,

I beg to differ. It’s all a matter of perspective, looking at it from my point of view I found Mr Hs reply to be very condescending.

I apologise if my reply came across as somewhat brusque.

I was merely posting a short reply which illustrated that I had a genuine problem with my switch and the dealer tried to fob me off with the same excuses.

I posted the information in good faith hoping it could help someone out in the future.
