diodes on alternator breaking down allowing a slow short circuit making your battery flat. i had cold start problems, made sure both batteries were well charged but could never get charging current down to where charger thinks battery is charged. worked for a while until diodes degraded so much that both newly charged batteries became completely flat whilest driving the car. all sorts of christmas tree lights and errors before going completely dead. diodes now being replaced. There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

Exact same problem. at 0 degrees kicks in perfectly, -1 degress or lower and 1st start requires lots of cranking, clouds of smoke etc.
It had a new battery (upgraded) last year
It had all new glow plugs last year (very expensive job. body off etc as old plugs sheered)
Garage (independant but LR specialist) scratching head, LR techinical say go back to basics but leave overnight - no point unless temperature drops below 0 degrees.
Can not see how it can be charger when it only occurs at below 0 degrees, last few mornings it as kicked in instantly.
I did search on fault seems BMW have same fault on their X5 engines but I can find no answer. LR/BMW must know what it is.
The FHB should be the answer (although a cheat to solve another problem) but mine like a lot of others seems to have been disabled at somepoint by LR dealers.
I will keep looking for an answer and report if I find one, however, if it stays warm it may take until next year to test it.

Couldnt get just the dedodes replaced, had to replace the whole alternator. Using old battery, all fine. Was warned that the battery might need replacing after being so deaded but I think I might invest in a good recharger with recovery programs for the time being. There's one wheel on my wagon, but i'm still rollin' along, it's the cherokee, they're after me, but I'm singing a happy song

I'm just in the habit of running the glow plugs a couple of cycles in cold weather or even three times when it's very cold.
Always starts sweeter
Mines an 05 with 60K factory fitted battery still running fine, sometimes the car stands for a couple of weeks and fires up when asked to 
Touch wood!!
