Sourcing a replacement block heater for the 4.0 V6

My block heater burned out last winter and the local dealer is having trouble locating a replacement part. Given that the engine appears to be a variant of Ford's 4.0 V6, which is quite common here in NA, would the block heater from Ford work as a substitute?

Frost plug type block heater?

I assume that the block heater in the V6 is the usual remove the frost plug and install the block heater - that was what Land Rover Edmonton installed in my 4.4 V8.

Below are the model numbers for the Phillips Temro block heaters commonly used in North America. I see two Ford units listed for the 4.0 V6, one listed as car, and the other as light truck.

The link below is to the Phillips Temro web site. They have an email request link where you put in the engine etc for your 3 and in theory they will tell you the model number to purchase.

My guess is that it will be the 38mm diameter unit rather than the 1.5 inch, but that is just a guess.

The other idea is order both heaters and then plan on returning one of them.

It should be not of hard to figure out which one it is by measuring the OD of the frost plug that is to be removed, (but prior to removal). A more important question is however which frost plug to be removed?

Remove the wrong one and there could be no empty space behind. The Temro people will let you know which plug is to be removed. Also suggest your Land Rover dealer call the Land Rover dealers either in Edmonton, Calgary, or Saskatchewan - they all have practice at it.

Sometimes the cord fails.

I gather sometimes the block heater is OK but it is the cord that has failed.

I do not know any easy ways to check the cord other than a volt meter/ohm meter but if you can get at the engine end you might see that the cord is connected. I gather that the block heater is on the drivers side near the exhaust pipe.

I copied below from another post on the Canada section of the Disco3 web site from about 2006.

Got under the truck this weekend and confirmed that there is a block heater on the driver side, it is however very hard to access. We pulled off the main skid plate, fully raised the suspension and turned the wheels to full lock. You can then see where you are headed, but it's tight. With a cold exhaust you might be able to force a hand in there.

I had guessed at the cord as part stores around here don't have LR3 info and I guessed wrong. After some more research I learned that the only cord that will work comes directly from Ford, you can't get them at canadian tire, or parts source, etc. Also, I have learned that the Calgary Dealer has changed their policy and will now fit a cord if specifically requested by the customer and as long as the customer takes full responsibility for a non "Land Rover" part. Apparently they now also have them in stock. So you can go back to them and request a cord be installed, but be aware that you will be paying shop rate for them to install and it would probably take them an hour so it will cost ya $100-$150.
