Had a D4 in for a set of belts today...

As luck would have it, the timing mark on the HPFP was at the top, and the belt was replaced

Then, just to prove a point, 2 full rotations of the crank, cam locking pin back in, and the HPFP mark was at the bottom...

So, I still stand by my first statement. Your pump timing wasn't 180 degrees out Wink

Strange .... Body Off, full view of both rear pulleys, and you only show the FIP Pulley!

Even stranger your FIP pulley is on the left; one FIP pulley shows rust and the other not ......

I never mentioned the front cam pulley, nor using timing pins on the front, so, you may have proved something, but I am not sure what.

Lets agree to disagree, hoping the timing on mine was a rare exception, and that you do not have people cranking all night to get things right IF their initial READ timing was out.

That wasn't body off. As I said, I had one in for belts today

If your HPFP pulley has the mark at the bottom, it isn't miss timed. You need to rotate the crank twice to align the mark at the top

The cam pin can be inserted when the HPFP marks are at the top, or in your case, at the bottom

Your pump wasn't mistimed from the factory, you only needed to rotate the engine to get the marks to align Thumbs Up

The two images of the READ belt have been flipped horizontally by the camera software, this is obvious when you look at the printing on the belt, it is backwards (mirror image).
Flipping the images back again presents them correctly.

You are right Disco_Mikey - my apologies for having hammered this out so long.

My assertion that the cam pulley was twice the diameter of the FIP pulley was wrong - it is 1.5 times which means that as you said, turning the crank twice will correct the 180 deg.

For posterity, I finally confirmed this by counting the teeth on the FIP pulley in your photo above (24), and counting the teeth on a cam pulley which I finally managed to do via this photo (36).

18 spot welds, once every two teeth = 36 teeth.

I will amend previous posts to correct.

Only wish I could have put a bet on the outcome. I know where my money would have been.

Youtubers, LRTime have a video on changing the HP fuel pump belt, although it doesn't look easy.

My advice- book a holiday/short break in Scotland. Book into Disco Mickey (Dundee). Relax.
You will be in good hands and you know the job will be done right.
I drove up from the midlands to visit a relative in Dundee and got a full 7 year service and all fluids changed whilst there.

Time to resurrect an old thread Wink

I bought a 2016 D4 last October which has had the engine replaced with a LR supplied unit.

Its a lovely car and smooth drive with one minor niggle that I'm trying to trace.

Now, with revs between 1200 -1600, I start to hear what sounds like wind reverb (similar to partially opening 1 window) but all windows and seals are good as are the A pillar covers.

So why am I posting on this thread? Well does anyone know what occurs with a 'mistimed' pump?

Now I've been searching for reasons that cause the 'reverb' and heard of 'resonance' in a 'mistimed' fuel pump. I've since read that even when the pump is slightly or oppositely misaligned the engine will run well enough.

I'm looking at this option as not long after I first bought the car I had occasion to plant my plant my right foot. The car made a 1 sec stall before launching off in a puff of black smoke (timing fuel starvation?). I haven't had cause to accelerate that hard since, but it will accelerate decently when I ask it to.

I'd appreciate your thoughts fella's

Cheers

Dave
