Roof bar options... No roof rails.

Having recently changed from a RRS to a Discovery 4, I'm on the hunt for roof bars to fit the new one.

I have a Thule roof box and 2 Thule bike racks.

Looking at the LR kit, with only around 85cm of useable bar, this just seems too narrow.

A through bar kit is therefore better, as will offer an extra 30+cm of width.

My preference is a Thule kit, but....

The car doesn't have the roof rails fitted. It has what appears to be fix points (caps on the roof gutter which I assume has a threaded slot below?)

So, is a Thule an option? Can it attach to the fix points?

Do I need to buy a roof rail kit?

Whispbar have both T track and fix point options. The Thule kits keep mentioning fix point, but then also T track.

Confusing...

ok, Thule have confirmed their kit is T-Track only (not fixed point), so require the LR roof rails.

Whispbar and Thule Wingbar both require T-track fitting of accessories due to width of bar - I like the flexibility of just clamping on where needed depending on what I have on the roof at that time.

The LR "style" kit is too narrow for what I require - I think I would only get the box on, and neither of the bikes.

Unless I can find some 869 Thule aerobars (no longer produced?), I think I will go with the Thule 769 square bar kit along with some roof rails (ebay "OEM style"), and just remove when not in use. (Can my old 890 Aero bars be cut down to size? They are 150cm width)

ok, so someone pointed something out to me... my D4 has the tow elecs fitted, but no tow bar fitted - seems previous owner kept it.

The person suggested a tow bar mounted cycle carrier, as easier to get bikes onto it as opposed to roof. Therefore just go with the LR style roof bars that will only be used for the roof box.

It actually sounded a decent suggestion, but means I have a lot of stuff that would then go to waste in the garage (existing cycle carriers etc)

Can the Thule cycle carriers be mounted to the LR roof bars if required? With clamps or t-track?

I used the Thule footpack and aero rails saved from my BMW E46. Used them on my last 3 discos to carry canoes, skibox, 4 bike carriers and timber. More clearance than LR bars which probably makes them quieter. Fixed to the threaded anchors with hex drive capscrews
