Yes I have xenons But the main beam is a fill in light and it is a 12/55w bulb

Ok, so at the slight risk of taking this off topic. I have adaptive bi-xenons and they are really excellent. On main beam, the shutter comes up and the fill in (main beam lights) come on. My impression (formed most recently by lots of night driving on high alpine hairpin roads) is that:
- the xenons on main beam setting provide most of the long throw lighting into the distance. With adaptive, these follow the streering very well but less dramatically obviously than my old 5 series BMW. Cornering lights help here.
- the fill in lights (which I changed to to some high performance, whiter Osram lamps) fill in around the sides of the xenons. Most noticeable when driving in wooded areas as they illuminate with a yellower light the canopy around the penetrating xenons closer to the car.

Is this what others find?

In practice, the xenons set up are extremely good and sufficient for pretty much anything though are perhaps better set up for road driving at road speeds rather than close in illumination for off road use. Not really a surprising design. However I really do fancy some completely, utterly, gratuitous illumination. I'd like to go for a roof bar mounted set up that could be removed as needed (I haven't really figured how to do that easily). But more importantly would be to have additional long distance throw at least as good as the xenons but with wider coverage AND better close in flood coverage. Thus, leading to some of the combined spot/flood units. That are starting to come onto the market.

So, Will be watching DDs conclusions with much interest...

Gordon, where did you pick up the feed from ? - was that on an MY12 D4

Sorry no, it was a 2010 RRS with Xenons. Clipped into the high-beam wire going into the LHS headlight unit. That feeds into the relay, placed just in front of the battery on one of the binding posts there, small signal cable running from there into the cabin.

Cheers,

Gordon

Wiring in spotlights

Hi Guys

I havnt managed to get my hands on a New d4 yet but I dont see any difference in the wiring as to a D3
all you would need would be a 12 volt relay and some lengths of cable

Battery wire to 12v with either 10 or 15 amp fuse to terminal 30 on the relay
black wire to terminal 86 on relay then to body of vehicle
spotlight positive wires to terminal 85 of relay
wire to secondary high beam spotlights you will need a multimetre to find this wire flick the full beam switch back and forth and test the wires in the large multiplug on the back of the headlight you should see the voltage drop if you have the right wire then come back up to 12 or 13 volts
DO NOT CONNECT the trigger wire of the relay to the xenon wires these will give a steady voltage reading of 12 to 13 volts and will not drop when you flick from high beam to low beam.
Do not use a test light probe to look for these wires it has to be a multimetre

If you need any help give me a call on 07831263000 , if I dont answer please leave a msg I might be busy
cheers

Mike sorry that does not work as Duncan has said already, none of the wires seems to change with the operation of the high low beam switch.

the Dually's come with full wiring loom, switch, relay etc.. Thumbs Up

the problem is finding a 12v switch from the main beam - the wires to the plug on the lights are all either 12v all the time (even when the ignition is off) or 7v or nothing. they only seem to work properly when the circuit is complete and earth switched.

apparently the ECU controls the switching from earth and also resets fuses - i didnt understand what the LR guy was talking about, but hes pretty good with all that stuff - i'll give them a call tomorrow or friday and see if hes had chance to think/look at it

if it's any help on my D3 I just 'scotchlocked' a feed wire off the halogen driving light part of the Xenon headlight ( ie the bit that only comes on with mainbeam ) from inside the unit, drilled a small hole in the replaceable cover for it which I then sealed with silicone. This is then run to the relay that feeds the driving lights. Job done Thumbs Up

lights

Hi Dunc
On the back of the D4 headlight can you take a cover off to expose the internal wiring of the light to the aux high beam lights. I think theres an H7 bulb in there.
Does one of the wires give you a 12v when the aux high beam is switched on

On the D3 the Genuine LR spotlights have to be activated with diagnostics and I would assume the D4 is the same
I dont have a LR spot light wiring diagram to hand but I just cannot see how its any different and all youre doing is pushing pins into connectors under the dash once youve told the car its got spotlights.
Im trying to get the large one to compare spotlight looms of the D3/ D4 but hes not got back to me yet
cheers

Finaly Rolling with laughter We've found a feed for the spots. On the back of the headlight theres a big rubber cover, pull it off and you will see the back of the light, there is 2 cabels (1 grey, 1 black i think). That gives the power source for the spots Thumbs Up All we've got to do is get the wire loom, switch and then fit them Thumbs Up
