Reverse camera image brightness.

Ok, got a strange issue with a D4 reverse camera.

I fitted an aftermarket reverse camera to a 2014 D4. (The one with the tailgate light, HIDS4U CCD version)
Wired directly through to the screen.

Enabled and all working fine, image is good and appears when in reverse as it should be.
But then the image starts getting lighter as if there is too much light or sunshine etc.
At night time, it gets much worse when the lights are on.

We agreed to change the camera for the LR camera as I thought it may be light leakage through the aftermarket camera.
The LR camera does a very similar thing although not as bad as the aftermarket one. It just seems to be trying to compensate for being too dark and therefore is too bright to be able to see much of the image clearly.

I've fitted many of these in both d3 and d4 and its left me a little stumped to trace the cause of the problem.
If the signal wiring was suspect, then you would lose image quality, that's not the issue, the quality of the image is fine. It's the brightness that means you can't see more than about a foot behind you once it's started adjusting its own brightness.

Has anyone else experienced this issue before or have an idea or heard of any other TSB's as I couldn't find any related to this.

Hi Ian, there is a TSB - LTB00683 - Touch screen display overexposed when reverse gear selected.

It does this on my MY13, but going back to N and then back to R sorts it. I haven't had the TSB applied, so can't say whether it solves it.

I've not had the TSB applied as it hardly ever happened on my MY13, but the over-exposure has become more frequent in recent months so I need to get it fixed.

Just a thought but is it possible to see the image on an alternative display rather than the disco screen.
This would prove for sure if it was the camera or touch screen

Well I've looked at the bulletin but not really sure what to do with it now. I'm not really familiar with the SDD etc. Doesn't seem like something I can do with my Nanocom... Confused hmm

The way it reads though, if I wait until the home screen is displayed before selecting reverse then it should be ok. I'll try this and report back.

I suspect it's just a software update, if so, then at some point we'll work out which files are needed to fix it.

Touch Screen Display Overexposed When Reverse Gear Is Selected
AFFECTED VEHICLE RANGE:
Discovery 4 / LR4 (LA)
Model Year:
2013
VIN:
652215-699715
MARKETS:
All Except Japan
CONDITION SUMMARY:
noteNOTE: This condition affects low line camera systems, fitted with reverse camera only.

Situation: A customer may report a concern that the Touch Screen (TS) display image for the rear camera appears to be too bright (overexposed) intermittently on the selection of the reverse gear. At the next vehicle start up cycle the image has returned to normal brightness.
Cause: If reverse gear is selected immediately after the engine is started, and before the home screen has appeared on the TS display, the screen back light will automatically use a default maximum light level regardless of ambient light levels. This results in the reverse camera image appearing too bright (overexposed). Suggested Customer Concern Code JH5.
Action: Should a customer express concern, follow the Service Instruction outlined below.

No Parts Required
TOOLS:
No Tools Required

Sorry for the dumb question, still something of a novice here... hope someone can help me

Is this change something I can apply with my Nanocom? If yes, assume I need BBS to provide an update including this change?

Thanks,
David

Trying to work out what the update is doing, is suspect a software update to the touchscreen.

Take it to your dealer he should do it for free.

Thanks for that. My only concern is that my camera is retrofitted by me (and CCF updated with my Nanocom) and I'm not sure if application of this update will correct this issue only or make other changes that I might not want... Just trying to understand the nature of the update.

I can confirm the dealer software update sorted my reverse camera over exposure issue. Image now spot on.
Not sure which update it was (mine is MY14 not 13) but I showed them a print of the tech info at the top of this thread and they applied an update and it all now works properly.
This was on a retrofit OEM camera supplied and fitted by the excellent Bodsy.
