Request: Clear list of companies we can /cannot mention
Following a post edit and then complete thread deletion on a request from a forum member regarding protection for fuel tanks, I would think it is in everyone's interest to know, exactly, which companies can and cannot be referenced when responding to requests for information and advice on our D3s and D4s.
Are we restricted to only mentioning approved site sponsors ? - if yes, then that covers quite a lot of posts which should now be edited. Also, it seems not all providers have "Site Sponsor" clearly marked with their forum name so how are forum members to know who is and is not an official sponsor.
Is any supplier, service provider etc allowed ? - if yes, then we shouldn't see a need for selective censorship of companies when offered up to forum members so allow them to make an informed choice (unless it is the company themselves that is soliciting for business).
Is it select companies ? - if yes, then those that cannot be mentioned need to be clearly listed with a reason so we (the forum community) know why they should be avoided (eg. not providing paid-for services etc). If they are a legitimate company / service provider that offers services and products to D3 and D4 owners then there shouldn't be any reason for them not being offered up as a possible solution to a forum member's request.
Thank you.The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

You can mention and link to any company, person or organisation listed under the Sponsors heading at the top of the page, under the DISCO3.CO.UK banner.
You can mention any relevant company, even if they are not a site sponsor, but you cannot link directly to their website.
However, GNPV are persona non grata in this because of some history with the site, and the subsequent fall out.

The only company that I will absolutely not allow to be discussed on this site is GNVP (and products thereof), for reasons that you're well aware of JF.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti
Any issues with the site let me know!

What ever about the merits of that Martin, could the post have been edited accordingly rather than pulled down altogether? It was after all a legitimate post from a member with a dented tank looking for some info nothing wrong with that is there?????????A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

That thread has been tidied, and re-instated in M&M (D3) - the discussion is as valid as any other.06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Martin - as you correctly say, I'm well aware of the circumstances hence why I always stay (or at least try to) out of comments that reference prior occurences even if any posts/threads are meant to be witty etc.
However, to conistently single out one company when there is a potential solution to a forum member's problem is not conducive to a forum community - especially if a reference to a company is in the same post as sponsors and non-sponsors and does not overtly promote or denigrate one nor the other. (And for the record, my recommendation was to contact an established forum member and site sponsor).
We will have to agree to disagree on this. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

They are not a site sponsor yet the link remains.
It seems to be a forum policy that is difficult to enforce and puts a lot of work on the shoulders of the mods. The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

I know what you are trying to say, but this global statement would seem to also include Land Rover Ltd, and the links to various things on their sites for example from the Wiki. It is a minefield!A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. There are known knowns. These are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns. That is to say, there are things that we now know we don’t know. But there are also unknown unknowns. These are things we do not know we don’t know.
Everyone clear A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.
No idea what the fall out was, but as a relative newbie surely we are all adult enough to let sleeping dogs lie and mention whoever or whatever company (within normal reason). The Gestapo tended to stop people mentioning certain topics........ surely we live in the western world????

Certainly is!
We have to judge each topic on its merits, and apply some common sense. Certainly when there is a commercial angle to the topic in question, we are likely to edit out a link to a non sponsor. We then insert a notification in the post that we have done so.
However, we are aware that some, when given a penny, will take a pound if you know what I mean. There have to be rules, and sometimes it is very hard to draw a line without upsetting someone.
For some, maybe the site has got too commercial, and this has taken away some of the enjoyment, but its got to a size now where it is a very powerful marketing tool for any company selling items to the Discovery and Land Rover community, and there are plenty of people out there who want to take advantage of that.
To follow up on Gareth's point above, perhaps a way to simplify the present workings would be to allow links to any commercial venture at all about any item that did not compete with an item available from a site sponsor.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

Navigator, I understand what you're saying, but as a community, how will we ever see anything else new or better that is out on the market?
Hid4u are the only supplier able to be mentioned for lighting?
one brand of Kennels? etc etc
(I'm, not selecteing those for any specific reason, just they're the last two ads I've seen)
Otherwise we end up in a communist community where there is only one state run option for everything....?Bodsys Brake Bible
