Removeable Tow Bar

Hi, just wondering if anyone can help me... currently got a Disco 3 with a removeable tow bar, just ordered my new Disco 4 without a tow bar, is it as simple as just keeping my tow bar and using it on the 4 or will none of the electrics etc be in place and will it simply just connect underneath as it currently does with the key or again will that not be in place?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Very Happy

You'll need the electrics fitted and enabled which means either dealer fit, diy fit + dealer trip for enabling, or diy + someone with a D4-capable MSV2 (start with Pete Bell at BAS on the forum). If you go dealer fit, there's a reasonable chance you'll need another visit to get the parking sensors to deactivate when towing Sad so just make them check it before you leave the first time!

Tow bar itself is a straight swap

Hi Martin

Thanks for the quick reply, seems like alot of hard work, perhaps I should just try and amend my order and see if its possible to add the towbar, I've got a build date of 5th September so hopefully not too late!!!

Thanks again..

Nick

I had same issue - to buy new Tow Bar and fittings was quoted at £550 Shocked
I swapped and had electrics fitted a little later for £240 - not cheap, but works OK and is now legal

If you have the detachable tow bar already then this will fit the D4.

The dealer will also have to configure the car when it arrives from LR so just ask them to do the tow bar activation as part of the set up, so should not cost anything

I had a 13 pin electrics fitted by a 3rd party for £175 including, I think you can pick up the LR electrics for 80 - 90 quidish (try Nick/TLO at Yeovil dealers, he discounts to forum members). Dealer will probably fit them aftermarket for not a huge amount more, especially if you get it done when they are working on the new vehicle anyway.

Many on here have fitted the electrics themselves, sounds a little fiddly though, I had just self fitted some side steps though and couldn't be Censored

what is "activating electrics?" is there something more than the D3?

for the D3 it was a case of connecting the electrics and that was it. it cost nothing to do myself,

just thought i'd ask as if it's the same as the D3 then no "activation" is needed..

The electrics work ok without the activation.

The activation though tells the car that you have a tow bar/electrics, it automatically disables the rear parking distance control when you attach to stop it bleating at you and also does something with the air suspension control system which can adjust when towing heavy loads.

I also have a flashing green trailer light on my dash when indicating, didn't notice it before the activation was done either. Very Happy

Hi My D4 has dealer fitted adjustable towbar,no problem with electrics, would suggest that the adjustable towbar is better as the d3/d4s fixed height towbar is a bit too low, especially with twin axle trailers, currently I am using the highest position and I recently spotted a d3 which also had the ball in the highest position.
