I know this is not exactly the topic of the thread, and is maybe a bit of a Stupid Question, but since "occasional use" has been mentioned several times I'll ask anyway:
Why not just have a hand operated winch (Tirfor or whatever) for the rear (or even the front if it's that "occasional")? Is this just a question of speed/laziness? Never having used either, I can believe that a manual winch is very slow, even if it's not much effort, but surely it's a good reserve - after all you can't have a winch pointing in all directions! There are also no electrical/hydraulic problems, and if you're not off-road and getting stuck every day, wouldn't it do, at least as a low-cost alternative?

yes.... Laziness.....
Ive got a farm jack that I could have used but that involves lots of "manual effort"...., I dont do manula effort so a winch seemed like the best option Duncan

... well perhaps laziness was a bit more hard than I meant! I don't think I'd really fancy spending more time than necessary lying in the mud/standing in the pouring rain/etc. than necessary!
I just wondered whether anyone used or used to use mand operated winches for "occasinal use".
