Premium Diesel

Does anyone use premium diesel? Does it give any better mpg? I found with my old petrol car that the 5% increase in fuel cost gave me an 8% increase in mpg.  I had to use several tanks of each as there were other influences like temperature and length of journey. With the Disco there is the fuel burning heater and winter/summer tyre swap factors which may skew the results.
I've waited till fuel costs are at their maximum before embarking on this experiment to give the Chancellor the maximum rake off as I know he'll spend it wisely!

Have you considered the normal fuel with the two stroke adoption? It's cheaper in the long run. Search these forums for more information

Use sooper diesel on the continent where €0.04 more than the standard stuff but not in the UK. It might be 7ppl more here but local to me it's only available in more expensive stations. I do find she's running more smoothly and seems to get about +10%mpg, though difficult to tell as usually got something wrong like a binding caliper. Banging Head

Ron

My works caddy van is three years old and went for its first MOT yesterday. When the mechanic went to do the emissions test he couldn't get a reading at all Shocked I put this down to a mixture of TSL and 2T.

Two quite different things youve spoken about in your mail

I dont beleive the Premium diesel works any better that standard (if there is a standard)....Ive tried both ina number of diesel engined vehicles & to me you dont getting any enhancement in performance..not that you'd notice & the mpg is the same....I have tried this over hundreds of miles...not just round here stop / start

I also have tried with synthetic 2 stroke stuff & was convinced the addition of a bit made a little difference o engine noise & smoothness in my D3....but maybe I imagined it.

Premium petrol is another beast.....
....standard "cooking" petrol in my XK....all hunky dorey....stacks of grunt
.....use premium (the 101 octane stuff you can get in Germany & Italy....ROCKET fuel...big difference in accelleration that you can "feel"...no difference in mpg (where I used it & measured it was in "litres per 100km mode anyway as had flipped car into kms in the instruments)

Personally....for your D3 I would buy the Millers additive & use it every tankfull.....this does make a difference you can feel (I believe a cetane booster)

I try not use any additives (fuel or sump oil) I dont know & trust..Millers I know well with a colleague who is thier export manager...a sound guy who knows his stuff technically. Redex is my number one fuel additive.

My sump oil hasnt & isnt going to have any additives...I use the best oil I can afford & change it every 7k miles...
I dont believe you can improve engine lubricating oil with additives of any sort unless you are using real bargain basement oil...then whats the point ?...nowadays quality branded engine lube oil is sophisticated stuff...semi or fully synthetic...capable of long mileages.....its the dogs doo-dahs.
Sorry Hess I wont alter my point of view....I know you tried with an additive
...I just wonder if the users / takers up of the fluid are still getting the enhanced performances ?

If you have nothing better to do you could put 2 stroke in, (people do give you a strange look when your in the petrol station) but I did and it made no difference Big Cry

You could put Super Derv in, but again I did and it made no difference Big Cry

If you buy a Disco you can't expect a 3t 4x4 to do more than 45mpg can you ? Rolling with laughter

I get 28 with fast A and B road driving 2k miles a month and I think thats great in a car of this size Thumbs Up

If premium diesel was cost effective it would be at the big isolated pump on all forecourts, Truck drivers know these things 8)

Agreed...

I realise Trucks use adblue which I thought was to lower NOx concentration....but just I wonder if they use Cetane additives ?
