Pre-fitting prep for Expo
As some would know, I am collecting my new expo next Wednesday, just after a few tips really. I have lookedat the fitting instructions and would like to knowif there is any short cuts. I was thinking of pre-drilling the holes in the trim for front supports, is that correct a 19mm hole?. I am only thinking this way so that once in Yeovil it could be fixed permanently. Any other shortcuts or knowledge I need to know. Many thanks in advance.

That's nptthe intention Dunc, sorry to aveupset you , just want to be prepared to permanently secure rather than doing it properly once home. Me being lazy I like to do things once only.

The only prep you can really do is cut the holes ...when you do, use the best hole cutter you can get your hands on otherwise you end up with a pig's ear shape and nasty shards Oh and don't forget to fit the struts, with plastic cover shrouds, on to the bolts before you drop the rack on 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021
Can you not buy the >07 roof strips predrilled to save all the faffing about? They'll still fit a pre 07 carI know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Cheers guys, was trying to save time and effort on doing it all again when I get home. The expo will be a sod to move myself as SWMBO is tiny and not able to help. Thought of doing the holes in trim this weekend so it's a one fit operation. I see what u mean DG on the pigs ear job that can be done, someone I know fitted a new a bar and used a blunt hole saw with a lot of pressure, for it to shreds and looks naff. I was wondering though, doesn't the 19mm hold seem big, the trim ain't much wider than that. Thanks for the advice guys

Have you asked how much they cost? A decent 19mm drill bit isn't cheap, plus you need to run the drill very slowly* if you want to avoid melting the surrounding plasticote.
(*Or very, very quickly with a really pucker drill bit)I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
If it's anything like the Front Runner Wind Cheetah rack (and I suspect it's worse), you might like to take a few last drives at 75+ mph (where legally-permissable, natch) as it'll be a noisy experience once fitted, until you dam up the gap 'twixt roof and rack underside (AndrewS modification).Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana

DrLex, I drive a truck all day mate at a soddin 56mph, so I have inavertantly re-trained myself to "Drivng Miss Daisy" style in the D3
Rarely go over 60mph, and when I do I feel I am in too much of a rush......
Alan, I spoke to Nick after all about the newer pre-drilled trims, he's confused and is'nt sure they are made/available. I took your advice as like you said a really good 19mm bit would probably cost a fortune. Any idea of the part number for TLO

I would look at hiring a tele-handler or even a crane to hold the rack above the car, then the rack can be lowered onto the rails in a controlled manner, ensuring a perfect line up on the bolts.

Bosch do a really nice hole cutter system, its not cheap but its not really expensive, I think it was about £10 for the shank and about £8-15 for the cutters depending on size (B&Q).
I bought one to replace a cheapo set I had before I did some DIY where the hole had to be accurate and its really really worth the investment if you do any DIY at all...
Can't recall Nick ever being refused before, that guy knows everything!
