Ditto Thumbs Up

Martin

Thank you for all the effort, maintenance, lack of sleep and the headaches you must have that you put into the site.

That was not much time to fix. Very Happy

Much longer though and some on here would have ended up in rehab. Whistle

Maybe we should point them to the many posts about excellium, ultimate and ultra diesels keeping the injectors clean Wink

Thanks for all your hard work Martin, I'm sure you were pretty ducked last night ( visibly calm but a whirr of activity just under the surface..) Thumbs Up

Nice work Martin - I hope you finally got some sleep and don't have too much of a headache this morning.

One other thing - there's no need to apologise. This is a free site for users so no-one has any right to expect 100% uptime - especially when something so serious happens that is way beyond your control.

Yeah I did wonder why I was getting some errors about a table marked as corrupt Neutral

The great thing about backup generators is people are usually very reluctant to take the entire DC off the grid and test that they start as expected in case it all goes wrong Wink

Still keeps the people who work in IT for companies selling backup hardware rich enough to be able to afford another tank of Diesel for the D3 Laughing

I worked at a data centre that had five diesel turbines continuously spinning ready to take on the hundreds of Kw of load should the triple redundant sub-station feeds fail. They had an x tonne( I forget if it was 15 or 20) flywheel on each turbine, which had enough inertia to provide power for the 0.3 seconds required for the diesel turbines to start up after power failure. There were weekly tests so that a) the gennies could be tested and b) the diesel in the bunkers could be topped up to ensure it never went stale. Assuming the power wasn't required in the datacentre, it could have been used to supply 50% of the power needs of the 100,000 population town it was located in. In 1990 it was at the peak of state of the art.

That all sounds really dandy until the day they hit the test switch, and one of the generators started up backwards Shocked The power surge detonated the multi-square-inch bussbars connecting the failed genny. The remainder carried on working Whistle
The engineer who started the test claimed that the first thing he did after hitting the emergency shut-down was go and change his shorts Laughing

Never did hear how the flywheel started spinning the wrong way without anyone or any system noticing; the whole unit was shipped by low loader/ferry to Norway for examination as it had never happened before.

Hi Martin,

Hats off for recovering the site from a situation like that so quickly. I don't think people realise how much work and planning is involved in running a site like this until things go wrong.

Noticed the briskoda forum got hacked badly and that really does sound a nightmare. That runs on vBulletin rather than phpBB so it's not the same software. (and no I'm not thinking of buying one - just looking for a part number for my mother's!)

Anyway Thanks!

David
