I’ve now been the proud owner of my D3 for the last 8 months and it has been good so far but not without some minor issues. For those that saw the “My Discovery” thread I did you will now I have driven D3’s D4’s and now D5’s for my job and that’s why I love them so.
So first off all here’s a list of the issues I had to sort:
Replace all the brakes as they were shot but also upgraded them to V8 spec at the same time.
Replaced the passenger door lock which failed
Replaced the fuel flap solenoid
Had a gearbox flush done to sort out slight shudder
Adjusted the handbrake after the motor started to squeal
Replaced drivers door check strap
Replaced some chewed up wheel nuts
So, so far nothing to heavy, last week I did a round trip of 750 miles from Kent to Yorkshire and the car drove so nicely and returned an average of 32mpg with 4 adults and a boot full of luggage. I thinks that’s fairly respectable for a big old car.
Although some would moan about the faults and failures, but it’s rekindled my interest in fixing my own car, allowed me to dust off my tools and get stuck in its also allowed me to get my sons involved and give them some new skills along with some bonding time with me.
I love the car for its road presence and ability to go where ever I want it to. My wife loves it too especially the loud pedal.
There are always thing to do and I want to do the following:
Full service including diffs brake and steering fluids
Remap to increase torque a bit
New tyres (not sure which ones yet)
Figure out why the brakes squeal in reverse even though they have been replaced and adjusted
De tango the lights
I’ve also started using a little 2 stroke in the fuel and I do feel the car runs a bit better for it (could be placebo effect though).
Next big hurdle for me will be the MOT in December so will not do too much before then to keep money available just in case.
The car has a charm and character which I didn’t think I would find in a modern car and the kids have named him “Arnie” because he’s like a terminator.
And I also want to thank the guys and girls on this forum for advice/pictures etc. Which has helped me no end
Thanks 2005 D3 SE Auto, zermatt silver
Gearbox flush by terrain vehicles
V8 brake upgrade
Will always ask silly questions
