Oil Consumption (surely this can't be right?)

Hi,

Since having my Disco 3 I had to top up the oil after only 2000 miles (it was at the bottom of the dipstick although it was full when I got the car).

I have just checked my oil level today (with 3050 miles on the clock) and found to my surprise that it is halfway down the dipstick again.

Surely this cannot be right (one and a half fill ups of oil in only 3000 miles)?

Has anyone else had this much consumption of oil?

I am thinking of re-mortgaging my house to pay for the amount of oil I will have to pay for if this is normal. Confused

Cheers

Marc

Yes it sounds about the same as mine. I have 14500 on the clock now, and it has not needed oil for about 4000, but prior to that it did need a couple of top ups. It is normal for a new engine to use a bit of oil.

Same for me as well. I used almost 3 litres of oil between 2,000 and 7,000 miles but have hardly used any in the next 7,000. Haven't a clue why this would be though as my driving has been consistent throughout. It might have been using oil at that rate in the first 2,000 miles, I just didn't check.

I must say that I find the dip stick a bit hard to read, even with the bifocals on. I know it has nobbles, so perhaps I should read by brail Razz

Any new engine will use oil, the piston rings need to bed in to the cylinder liners.

Yep, 4000 miles and it needs another top up. Like you the oil went to low after the first few thousand miles.

Thank you for your replies.

I spoke to the dealer on this since I posted, as the car is going in to fix the S Socket electrics, and they seemed quite concerned about the amount of oil it is using.

Seeing that everyone on here has had the same oil consumption (or there abouts) I think the dealer will not find anything wrong.

I will keep you posted.

Cheers
