Many thanks dj, food for thought! I really need to test the 19" Pirelli's, but so far I've only been on easy tracks & dry grass fields. Just looking at them doesn't inspire confidence though!
I think that you may be surprised by the standard tyres, don't forget that the LRE D3's only use standard tyres.
The last time I was with them at Tixover the HSE that I was driving has tyres on that were well worn but still behaved perfectly in very wet / sticky conditions.Zermatt silver 06 reg.

I agree. The LRE RRS I was in today a t Tixover had standard road tyres, and had amazing grip in wet, muddy conditions.

I'm sure your right, It's hard to comprehend how capable the D3 really is without experiencing it. Unfortunately there was no free LRE for me
When I go off-road, it tends to be with a load of people in Defenders, old Disco's & assorted Jap.stuff all with O/R or 50/50 tyres on.
If I get stuck in my brand new HSE, the teasing will be merciless
About an hour to change all the wheels over is a fair guess, I have a quick lift trolley jack and an air compressor with impact wrench, so it takes me just under half an hour, including doing all the pressures. It was a worthwhile investment given that the defender also has two sets of wheels!
About the same here, takes me about 20 mins to change all 4 with a quick lift trolley jack (and axle stand for safety), standard wheel wrench and torque wrench to finish them off + a minute or two to check the pressures and a few minutes more if any air is neededThe End
I was having a look, as I regularly do at what tyres were available.
I found that you guys (UK) have access to a Yokohama AVS S/T Type - 1. It looks like it has pretty agressive tread blocks and self cleaning grooves, even if it is a road biased tyre.
You can get it in 285/60R 18 113V, 285/55R18 113V (if you wanted to maintain rolling diameter).
Theres also Yokahama ADVAN S.T. which come in 285/55R18 113W.
Has anyone had any experience with/or heard of wear/grip etc.?
Not had any experience of them but judging by the website both are directional and and as you say road biased, though I agree the AVS tread pattern is pretty aggressive. Good to know there's more options out there. Pity the Geolander A/Ts and M/Ts aren't available in bigger sizesThe End

Used to run this size on my old ML on AMG rims great road tyres Slimers is right they are directional, usless of road thats why I had a second set of wheels running BFG 265-70-17 for off road
