After sending me a renewal request for £1050 with a compulsory 500 excess. (inc 9 years NCD and 6 years insured with them) I have managed to get cover for £413 with Swiftcover with a smaller excess.
I know the off road cover might be debatable, but with that much a difference, and with less excess, its a no brainer. I'm not even going to phone NFU and ask for them to reconsider.

I'm sure it must be a cyclic thing. I was with Swiftcover for 5 or so years and their recent renewal on SWMBO's Jag was £470 with 8 yrs NCD and £500 excess. I ended up going with Privilege for the princely sum of £342 and £250 excess.
Bottom line is ALWAYS do the main comparison sites about a month before renewal. This seems to be the sweet spot time wise. The closer it gets to actual renewal date the more expensive it gets. I usually do this and then send the cheapest quote to my current insurer with the standard message of "Match that price and you keep the business"

Gareth,I have had exactly the same experience,as I'm sure many on here have too.......I don't understand Insurance companies.......I had KWIK-FIT (or whoever they really are) "VIP" Insurance last year......the renewal came through and was £200 more than the ones I eventually went with.....I'm sure it must be related to underwriting and value of claims that they have paid out over the previous year, but surely keeping a customer, who has a full no claims, and has just paid them over the last year, making no claims, would be a priority ??....would I not be the definition of a "good" customer i.e. someone worth trying to keep ?
And there was me thinking "loyalty" was a 2-way thing..... "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

NFU have lost all of our business (cars, house, caravan) over the last 2 years. They wouldnt quote for the D3 last time around, reconed my postcode had too many claims.

Had exact same story with NFU in September - last year paid £800, this year's premium £1600.
Reason given was amount of claims over the bad winter had forced a rethink on figures.
Unfortunately the local office I dealt with (whose own staff had been hit) where worrying whether the office would stay open given the complete loss of business they'd experienced.
I've now gone with Aviva 4x4 at around £720 - no brainer really... I see no ships........

Would think the NFU are being hammered for the huge increase in theft of farm equipmet and livestock as well as the usual car related claims. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Ronp.....spot on...Our crew have had loads of Red nicked over the last 2 years.....we leave the tanks unlocked and unprotected because the costs of repairing the damage has been much greater than the cost of replacing the fuel.....
machinery can lie unused waiting for spares/repairs for weeks, filling from the bowser takes 5 minutes...
Don't even get me started on quad bike thefts.... "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Not by you though and that's the whole issue with the insurance system! What the hell is the point of raising the premium by so much for existing customers that have proven to give and not take? It's not like you won't take your business elsewhere which is what all companies no matter what sector of business should be avoiding. It's cheaper to keep a customer than to gain one. I'm 37 with 9 years no claims, no points and 2 non-fault accidents in the last 5 years (total damage to my car totalled £0) I was with NFU last year with my D1, £350. When I came to renewal, they wanted £1200. No accidents, no convictions. Needless to say I told them where to go.
Having said that, Sureterm (who I went with) are just as bad. £390 for the D1, 10 DAYS later when I got my D3, they wanted an EXTRA £650 to transfer the insurance, so I had to twll them where to go and ended up with Tesco (still £550 ) 2005 TDV6 SE - Cairns Blue

After a similar whopping increase I wrote to the NFU CEO. They did eventually drop the price to a level I was comfortable at. However, if they try the same again next year I'll be off.

Hi Gareth, just a queston and I know it may not be relevant to you, but do you know if your new insurers will cover you in north Africa, Tunisia, Morocco and such like?
