New used Disco4 - Is the Crankshaft issue really that bad? |

Hi all!
I am new here and on the verge of buying a disco 4 (120k miles + new timingbelt and fully serviced) with (limited) used car warranty.
I just read about the crank shaft issue and now i am a bit worried that this could happen to me as well. On the other side people in forums and especially people posting in forums do not reflect reality in most of the time and there must be thousands of working D4´s out there without any problems.
What would you say - is the possibilty that the crank shaft is breaking on a 120k miles disco really that high? If I would experience this motor failure I propably would no be able to afford a replacement motor immediately.Its just a fun car so it wouldnt be the end of the world but still extremely annaoyning and unfortunate.
I just love the D4´s and there are no cars out there that compare to this model unfortunately - but this you know already Another option would be to buy a L322.... but who knows what will go wrong with this car.

I still see an awful lot of D3/4’s on the road.
Having said that, I am sure that anyone who owns either will have that concern to some degree or another. I did, but it was the mileage on my last D4 that was the primary concern for trading it in for a FFRR. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

2014 D4 HSE (Almost too bling)-GONE
2015 D4 HSE (A heated what?)-GONE

Any going at all is more than they should . You only have to look at recent threads on here to see its a regular occurence . If they got to 120k that would be a bonus it is happening at any stage but around 60-70k seems quite common. Having suffered with it and knowing the cause it shouldnt have been used for so long as I think JLR are now realising as the D5s are starting to suffer.
I was a person who thought the stories of the crank could not be that bad ,but got bitten by it.

The numbers that fail are low in percentage terms compared with the numbers made/on the road.
The issue is that the bits to fix them do not seem to be available as they were for earlier JLR engines ... and it's actually a "Ford" engine and is in JLR/Ford/Peugeot/Citroen cars, so it's a bit odd the parts aren't available IMHO.
Some on here have overcome the apparent lack of parts (lots of fiddling about with Ford bearings ?) and there are Facebook pages dedicated to replacing the JLR lump with other engines ... but seemingly most popular routes are
1. short engine from JLR
2. find a Jag with suitable lump. .

I mitigated the worry by of the crank going by having a warranty that (confirmed in writing) covered crankshaft failure, but changed at 10 years old anyway as the warranty was going to get exponentially expensive, plus other key components (gearbox, diffs, steering, bearings) etc. were also now joining the worry list.
It's a very complex vehicle. I keep my sister's 15+ year old Corsa on the road for less than £200 a year and there's pretty much nothing on it that I can't replace in a few hours, or a weekend day at most. You can't have a big, complex, capable 'luxury' off roader without the increased risk of costly repairs, and it's not just the crankshaft. D4 XS, gone, much loved, never forgotten

If the car ticks all your boxes and you are prepared to accept that a vital part on it may fail then buy one, enjoy the experience of owning and driving one and don't look back.
If you are going to spend your whole experience wondering if it may break at any time (as any car can) then look elsewhere... simples (not sure what else you would look at for the money or practicality though.. but that's been asked on here many times before) I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Its worth remembering that this is a forum (one of the best in my opinion). This is where many people come who experience crank failure, so the numbers you see on here are not representative of the overall failure rate. It is a risk. Don’t think anyone has ever managed to calculate numbers produced vs numbers that have failed. Gary

You are buying a vehicle with 120k km/miles on the clock.
Buy with your eyes open and you'll give and get yourself the best possible vehicle.
Fully serviced and timing belt changed is a great start. By whom and when were the services would be my next look.
You could get it inspected, that would help point out any deficiencies but as far as I am aware there is nothing that will tell you if the crank or any other hidden part is going to let go.
As previous posters have said there's an awful lot of D3/D4s on the roads and forums do tend to attract the problems and fixes posts, that's why we are all here.
I've leased and now own a D4. I don't lie awake worrying, I don't think about it unless I read a post on here. I try and maintain and look after my D4 but most of all I drive it. Everywhere.. And I enjoy that.
I wish you a successful conclusion to your deliberations and hope you end up in a D4, it's a superb car, despite the pings, pops and sometimes (terminal) bangs you'll read of on here...

JLR were inspecting "something" in Korea and China to identify affected engines but I'm not sure we ever worked out exactly "what" it was

After my above post I spoke with someone else in the local town this morning... his 2015 D4 is in having a new engine fitted... 140k miles.... full service history... I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!
