New General Grabber AT3
Hi All,
Been after tyres for a while as the Pirelli Scorpions decided to start cracking on the shoulders despite only being 4 years old with about 4mm of tread left. These cracks were large enough to put a 2 pence piece in so really not good. Sure... I could have just had a bad batch but while they were great, to begin with, they dropped off a cliff IMHO at about 50% worn.
After a bit of time researching the various forums and many positive reviews on here, I decided on the General Grabber AT3's. My plan was to go with a 275/45/20 H as V spec is like rocking horse poop. From talking to various dealers, there is a shortage of these with excuses ranging from Covid.. to some boat getting stuck in the Suez canal or even the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.... take your pick!
I actually needed the tyres replaced before a Cornwall camping trip this weekend and so I started to feel like that kid from the 1985 Yellow pages Hornby advert.
I found the phone number for Charles at JCS 4x4 in Nottingham and waited for the usual 'No' or an attempt to talk me into the latest Korean ditch finders. Instead, I just got an extremely laid back 'yep.. pop along tomorrow, I got 275 and 255 sizes
I turned up this afternoon and Charles promptly brought both tyres sizes out. I then looked them over while he explained the slight pros and cons with both on the D4 while I scratched my chin.
I was just about to do a coin toss when he said did I want to look at the new AT3 size which has just arrived? Err...sure! This tyre is a 265/50/20 and so neatly sits in the middle of the other two. The main difference is a slightly revised and thicker side wall (111 rated) and the higher V-spec along with an improved wet sticker rating if anything to go by. 'This might do you he said... bit of a sweet spot to the OEM size I suspect'
I agreed to have 4 tyres and Charles set about changing the tyres with the most care I've ever seen. He even used a protector on my freshly refurbed Landmark rims.
With everything getting a final check and nuts torqued, I set off home half expecting some more tyre noise or a stiffer ride. Frankly, I was astounded. It was EXACTLY the same ride as before on-road... even when pressing on at 80 mph. No extra noise or any sign of tramlining on the heavily lorry rutted M1.
It can't comment on wet performance or the light off-road I will do... but am beginning to see what everyone is on about.
Anyway, hope this is some use to those looking for Tyres. I have no affiliation with Charles or General Tyres (I make websites for a living) but I can highly recommend him especially as he is a fellow D3 and D4 owner.

Sounds like you made the right decision. I had General Grabber AT2's and had no problems with them.

I’m running AT3s in 275/45/20 in V spec and coming from the fantastic (but now defunct) LTZ, the AT3 is every bit as good.
Used to run 285/50/20 on the D3 for a higher sidewall, unfortunately that size rubs on the D4 (& later model D3s.)
So would be good to see a side on image of the 265/50/20, as doing the maths it gives (just about) an extra 9mm of sidewall.
Just wondering how noticeable that is against the 275/45/20. ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Looks (and sounds) like a good tyre, but what were you fitting them on D3 or D4? can't see the info on your profile.
If you could let us know the MY as this can also make a difference as Ron pointed out.
CheersI want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

can vouch for these tyres - best tyres i have ever had since the General Grabber AT's were discontinued. I have pinched one once on a rock and it ripped but i was fully laden going done between to banks too fast and a rock pocking out just mutilated the tyre and alloy so any tyre would have done the same. Good price too

Hi there,
Sorry for being slow coming back. Work and family commitments don't leave much 'me' time.
Just to clarify I have a MY2013 D4 HSE running 20's.
Just to say, I found the 275's noticeably taller. I really wanted to keep the tyre size (and speedo) as close to the original as possible but with a little more rim protection which the 265's give.
In terms of side view the tyre is here (view the gallery for more).
Now I have a few hundred miles on them am more than happy. I had two landy owners come over and ask what they are when I was outside the dealership last week. Guess rather ironically they don't see many with AT tyres
Hope that helps

Hi, just curious regarding the sizings you mention. I can understand having the choice with regards wall height on a tyre, but surely the width is determined by the rim its going on? From your post it seems you are looking at 255, 265 and 275 wide tyres on the same wheels? I am confused... is that even an option?
I am currently on Scorpions on 255/55/19's and am looking for AT options on another post (currently deciding between Cooper Discoverer AT3 Sport 2, General Grabber AT3 and Scorpion AT+)
CheersMany Thanks

I have 275 45 20 on the same rims. I think some people run 285.
They fit fine, yes to a point the rim size governs the tyre width but in this case they fit fine. 2014 D4 XS

I assume the extra width is to give the rim a bit more protection from curbing etc? As it protrudes further on the side profile?
Is there a guide anywhere as to what upper and lower limits there are for each wheel / tyre size. Many Thanks

So... I need to order a set of tyres in the next couple of days... what's the verdict on my 3 choices?
General Grabber AT3 (preferred based on feedback hits on here)
Scorpion AT+ (preferred for visual appeal and good comparison to BF Goodrich AT T/A KO2 when reviewed)
Discoverer AT3 Sport 2 (preferred for fuel and wet 'C' ratings - but can't find any reviews from users)
Help.
I do wish BF Goodrich would make 19" AT T/A KO2 tyres so I wouldn't need to decide. Many Thanks
