Looking to get into disco 3 - laning advice

Hi guys.

Been lurking in this forum for a while, joined up & on the hunt for a Disco 3.

Previously had a Disco td5, now in a 90 td5. I do love my 90 however i miss the practicality of the discovery I had previously.

The Disco 3 will be a weekend car, used for hacking about, pursuits, towing the jet ski, quads etc. however I do want to go laning in it, as I do defender at the moment. I understand that I might get a bit of bramble rash, scratches etc, however I'm not worried about that. Disco 3 can be picked up at bargain prices now and I'm looking at having this for a while.

Looking at a 56 plate HSE, it's done a few miles but that doesn't put me off. The only thing of concern is it's got a transmission bong. Any ideas?

I understand that it's not as rugged as a defender. Is this going to ok for laning? What mods do you guys do to prep them?

Scott

No idea on your gearbox bong but getting the fault codes read would be a good start Thumbs Up
As for lanning the D3/4's are perfect for green lanes, when the Defender chaps are moaning about it being too cold or too warm you are nice and cocooned in luxury Whistle Laughing

Only modifications are an RLD sump guard and some A/T tyres Thumbs Up

Ive no doubt the D3 will go anywhere a 90 will, but a 90 with dents and scratches is just another 90, but a D3 with the same is going to seriously hurt its resale value.
Down here in sunny Kent a lot of the lanes are so tight you just wouldnt be able to get a D3 down them, any doubters I am more than willing to take you on a guided tour of tight lanes Mr. Green
Had to go and rescue a mate in his frontera the other night in the 90, the lane is basically a no go when its wet as one mistake puts you down a drop into the frarmers field a few feet below, naturally he was halfway there and even managed to dent the 90s roof.

Lynall,

Was that the North Downs way Between Exedown and Wrotham? If so, you are not kidding! Very tight and pretty tricky at the Wrotham end as you say. Of course, I never ended up in the farmers field at all ! Whistle Rolling with laughter

No it was just off the side of Bluebell hill lanea number MR448.
Basically anything that heads uphill on the downs or traverses it sideways is proper dodgy this time of the year.
KH167 is one of the worst
KH221 tricky when wet the small stream and rail bridge fantastic view in the dry
KH645 goes for miles and is pretty good
None of the above will be accessible with a D3 that you like!
Theres a lot of lanes out the back of Meopham and Snodland, some need permits that are available foc from kent county council
Out ashford way theres the lane seven hour mile I think theres a vid on youtube, some of the ruts were a few feet deep when I walked it a couple of years ago.

I am concerned about damage, I'm not hugely bothered about a few scratches etc.

Can get a d3 for around the 8k mark, if I keep it at least 3 years, what's it going to owe me? Not a lot at all, they will always have a value, worst case if Iv destroyed it, tipped it, rolled it etc il break it, the parts fetch string money.

You are correct, it's the luxury that I'm missing, 90's are great, but having only CDL, and no TC they do get stuck easily, spinning 2 wheels on cross axle stuff. My friend has a D4, it's amazingly capable on road tyres, but that's due to the electrical gadgets.

I have been laning in Wales & the dales a few times. I know the welsh lanes better, which ones are doable in a D3 without too much damage? Strata, happy valley, pheasant steps, b Censored d lane?

Have on my list:

Sump guard
Off road wheels & mud tyres
Sill/door protectors rock sliders, not keen on tree sliders for the D3
Already got AT&T the recovery gear

Any suggestions on branding?

RLD is the man to contact on here re sump guard & rock sliders, also worthwhile getting a spare wheel protector - not so much for off road but stopping thieving ba Censored ds nicking the wheel/tyre/knackering the winch.

Prospeed (also found on here) also do great kit, you'll find that a little more expensive but awesome stuff.

Currently using Goodyear Duratracs on mine, had them round a challenging (Borders Hill Rally) circuit & they were impressive, General Grabber AT's (again impressive but not as aggressive as the Goodyear) & Cooper & Pirelli are other options, lots of different opinions available

SWMBO's tub with made to order rock/tree sliders & Grabber AT's

Mine with Prospeed rock/tree sliders & Goodyear Duratracs

Scott, you should come to the Mids Meet,

Have a look at the various vehicles that usually turn up or just for a beer and a mostly Disco related natter!

I have done Strata and Happy Valley in my Disco 3 no problem at all. I did hold my breath a few times at the tight bits. As you say a defender with a dent is just another Defender. A disco with a big dented door is a problem Laughing i just have a steering guard and all terrain tyres
