Looking at buying D4
Hi all!
I am looking at buying a D4 after xmas and so I'm doing my research to try and get my head round the different specs, engines, models etc etc.
Ive always loved land rovers in general, and this will be my first so I'm a bit of a newb!
I have been having a good dig around the forum and found out some good info, thanks!
All in all after reading various posts I am quite assured that the 4 is quite a reliable and extremely capable beast. It seems the main concern being the crank issue? Is there something that can be done as a preventative measure with this or is it a case of fingers crossed?
Just need to get my head around spec levels etc. I gather the HSE is the crème de la crème fully kitted out model?
And then the different engines. I think I will aim at the 3 litre due to the size/weight of the vehicle in the first place but mainly as I will be tugging a large caravan around occasionally.
Is there a particular engine to look for? or avoid? probably a daft question but what is the difference between SDV & TDV? which is the desirable preference?
Oh and realistically what MPG can I expect? Im not expecting anything great but would be good to know. My journeys are mixed between approx 300 miles a week mainly motorway & about 200 a week urban
Any info at all would be much appreciated.

Only one spec engine in the UK for D4 and that's the 3l diesel, As mentioned HSE Lux was the top of the range in the later years, but depends on your budget.
Try and got for an 8 speed gearbox if you can, not 100% sure of when they came in though (2012?)
I have a 2015 model and after 2 weeks of ownership I'm getting 28mpg, my 2008 D3 manual was getting about the same/
Towing a caravan will cut that 28 mpg probably down to the low 20's, although I only tow a camping trailer with mine, and see the 28 mpg drop to 25 mpg
I think your budged is important, once you know this, then you can start to look for the spec etc that you can afford Iggy/Ieuan

And I think there is a difference of about 10bhp between the SDV6 and TDV6 engines, but am not sure which way round the difference is! The latter engines are slightly more powerful.Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE

I have D4 65 plate with 17.5 k miles and on very recent 110 mile round trip on A roads, no motorways on that trip, I had 36.5mpg on return home.
With twin axle caravan (1710kg) on 55 mile run from dealer to home on Mainly Motorway and A roads averaged 22. Can't ask more from a 2.6 ton vehicle.

Thanks all for your replies!
I will have to see what xmas sets me back and how many pennies I can put away but budget wise will be around the 15k mark. I think this may put me out of the 2012+ 8 speed price bracket.
I guess, as you say, budget will dictate what is available and I'm certainly not expecting a HSE lux but just wondering what specs are out there. I'm a man of gadgets
These MPG figures are better than I expected especially towing.
So what are the things to look out for/check on them? obviously service history & receipts a must. check the air suspension is working, any others apart from the usual with any car?

Warranty, warranty, warranty!
The most important element of your purchase IMO.

d4 fuel consumption
Am 2 weeks into owning a my14 D4 SE. 18000 on the clock with two years full LR warrenty.
Just completed 400 mile trip towing twin axle van......mainly M1, M6, M56 with mile upon mile of 50mph speed restrictions.
mpg returned 20.7miles......without towing just over 30mpg.
Almost identical to my 3.2lt manual Shogun.
But the quality of ride in the Disco compared to the Shogun was superb.

I have just been through the D4 buying process and hope I got it right.
In the end I went for a one owner, FLRSH, 2014 HSE (good spec without breaking the bank) from a LR dealer.
My rational for my purchase was (1) Stop / Start gave me lower tax bracket and slightly better fuel economy
(2) 2 years warranty , having experienced LR extended warranty on a LR RR it was invaluable saved me over £8.5 on a transmission!!. beyond these two points was condition, spec, colour, mileage etc all the typical stuff.
I found that non franchise dealers were not that much cheaper but without the warranty. I would have bought privately if I could have found one with extended warranty or a current LR warranty in my price bracket but I couldn't find one.
Pick it up in about a week looking forward to being back in a LR after number of years in Audi & BMW.
Good luck with your hunt

I don’t think that’s fully correct. I believe the extra 10hp came with the 8 speed box.
There are 6 speed SDV6 about with 245hp

OK so I am getting itchy fingers and finding it hard to wait till after xmas!
Been looking extensively at discos for sale and think I have sussed out what I'm looking for:
In an ideal world:
2011+ (for the more economical SDV engine)
XS or ideally HSE spec
cream leather 2 tone interior (not sure what the trim is officially called)
Side steps (3 young kids and a short a*se missis!)
10 spoke alloys
privacy glass
very interested in reversing cam for hitching up the caravan
comprehensive history & cam belt done etc
As far as colour goes I'm thinking silver or black but not too fussy
I have seen a HSE that ticks all the boxes except side steps. how expensive are these to pick up second hand and how easy are they to fit? I'm assuming they just bolt on?
