Guys, I have a Baja Rack which weighs about 54kg, along with an ARB RTT which weighs around 90kg. I just drove from New York to Texas and back; in total 5600 kilometers. Let me tell you... at around 65 km/h, the stability was awful.
I just had new General Grabber AT2s mounted/balanced a few days before my trip, along with an alignment. It drove perfectly until I put the RTT on. So, if you're going the RTT route, definitely look for the lightest option possible. With a 144kg~ load on the roof, when a gust of wind came, it was challenging to keep it in the lane.
I'm driving from New York to Alaska and back next spring; a 16,000+ kilometer trip! That sounds wrong! I drove to Morocco with loads of weight on the roof (as did Slimer and DG) and we never had any handling problems at all.
If you say a gust of wind nearly blew it over at only 40mph, then I would be highly suspicious of the alignment you have just had done. Best get the rack off the roof and test it again, as I suspect something else is the real problem.

As far as stability, I should have been more specific. It didn't feel like it was going to blow it over or have any sensation of rolling over at all. It just made it drift off of a straight line starting at speeds of 40 mph and up. Most of the 3500 miles (5600 km), I drove around 80mph (128 kph).
Driving through the southern states of America, the roads are straight shoots and go on for miles and miles. It was constant work to keep it straight though, especially when the wind gusts picked up.
I've had the rack on for a while, and never had handling issues. It only started when I added the 200 lb+ (90 kg) RTT to it. The 18-wheeler that delivered the RTT at the beginning of the month, had the ARB Series III Simpson tent box listed at 220 lbs (100kg). The Baja Rack weighs 120 lbs (54kg). So, together that's around 340 lbs (150kg~) of weight on the roof. At slower speeds, it handles fine and drives straight. That's the suggested weight rating for when you're actually driving. With my rack, RTT, and two people, I had about 600 lbs (270 kg~) on the roof without any issues. I drove around for 5,000 miles this past month.
