Just Ordered One

Had the D4 for a couple of years and was worrying myself about crankshaft issues when it was out of warranty so we we went back to a DS.
Just had that 12 months with no issues but missing the space and driving position of the D4 , visited out usual dealer at the weekend and ordered a 2.0 Diesel SE .
There"s only 2 of us and no towing so happy to go with the SD4 Engine , Eiger Grey/Heated SW/Privacy/Interactive Driver Display/360 Cameras .

D5 has a very different driving position from a D4. Smaller glass area and you sit lower in the vehicle, with the centre console and dash being significantly higher.

Having driven 12.5k miles in a D5 this year, it was very noticeable getting back into the FFRR, which has a driving position and glass area much more akin to that of the D3/4. I think the taller windscreen on the D3/4/FFRR makes the most difference and the only two passengers I've had in the FFRR since getting it back last week have commented on that. The D5 is certainly more "sporty" and car like.

That's not intended to be in anyway a negative statement, some will prefer it and some, myself included, won't. Thumbs Up

Canada 2016 LR4 3.0 SDV6 Landmark LE Auto Yulong WhiteLR4

I'm in the US and the D4 prices here are rocketing - to the point where it's silly. D5 prices are nothing like as strong for second hand vehicles.

I want to replace by D3 V8 with a D4 2016 but I'm reluctant to pay what the vehicles are getting.

Can I ask for a few views from those who've had the D4 and the D5 what the difference is in terms of load carrying? We use the D3 as a workhorse. We do a lot of work around the house and it's used for everything from carrying 14 ft deck planks on the roof to top soil in the boot. We also need to be able to place two quite heavy kayaks on the roof and load it up for camping. We use the cargo barrier all the time, and the dog cage most of the time.

Any noticeable differences between the two vehicles as I'm wondering if I need to re-think my plan given D4 prices.

Would appreciate any thoughts.

Yes, whilst D3 and D4 are quite van like (i.e quite Square) the D5 isnt. Dont get me wrong, you can get a huge amount of stuff into a D5 (see one of my other posts), but access isnt as easy, as the rear opening isnt as good on the D5 (not as square or as tall as D3/4). But the D5 has a longer rear bed length with all the seats down. As for roof load, I have only had ladders on the roof, but dont LR say 75Kg rating on the roof bars anyway?. I have the long roof rails on my D5 with Thule crossbars.

Thanks, Al, that's very helpful. I may test drive one; the stealer is close by. I checked to see if they do the cargo divider for the D5 as they do with the D3 and 4 but it seems not. Such a shame. We'd be lost with out it the amount of crap we cart around.

Biggest surprise on mine... on a fill up I get around 620mile range off a tank. On my D3 I get 420-450. You don't drive either car if fuel economy if forefront of your mind, but very noticeable how longer I go between fill-ups!

I’ve seen a D5 with a cargo divider. I assumed it was a LR one. Perhaps it was a custom build or aftermarket specialist. It was used to separate lurchers.

Perfectly prepared to accept I got that wrong. My search was not exhaustive. It'd be good to know they have made one. We find that the barrier and the dog cage are invaluable. (It really does keep the children quiet).

A couple of things to add to what’s already been said:

1. The roof rails on the D4 are the best and most versatile I’ve ever used; you can fit as many cross bars as you like and put them wherever you want them. The rails on the D5 (which are almost identical to my current Fatty) are no where near as practical and robust. The ability to leave the drop down tailgate open and still close the top half also made it a great platform to stand on while loading/unloading the roof and finally, the near vertical sides made accessing the roof much easier. Consequently, I’ve sold my roof carrying stuff and now pull a trailer instead - would that help you? It gives a lot more practical space than even the D4 provided:



2. If the low loading height is helpful, bear in mind that the very lowest loading height possible in the ‘5 (even using the extra lowering facility in the boot) is only as low as the ‘4 was in its normal height setting.
 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: 2 x FL2 as “second” cars 🙄

2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)

I don’t think I agree with the above statement about the roof bars, as I could put my Thule bars anywhere up and down the length of the rails on the D5, and add more cross bars if I wanted..

Thanks. I do appreciate the feedback. I absolutely adore the FFRR; I've driven a friend's supercharged V8 and I'd have one tomorrow if it wasn't for the pesky dog, family, etc.

I'm going to continue running the gauntlet of LR4s over here for a while longer. Found a nice 2015 with great spec a couple of hundred miles N of me, but it turns out it was involved in a rear-end shunt. The seller says damage was light, but I'm wary. I know from experience that these are built like tanks, but I could do without the hassle.
