The discovery sport face lift has done away with the rotary selector as has the Evouque so would expect this to continue through the range, Jag seem to be also replacing the rotary selector as well as models are upgraded.

It was a loss from the RRS stick to rotary but to be honest - i dont miss that, actually gives more central room, every cloud etc

A stick is so 1980s retro. On that point alone, if they changed back to it, I wouldn’t buy another LR, period.

I think most manufacturers are moving away from the rotary and back to a lever of some form. Certainly noticed it in Mercedes.

I dislike the rotary gear control. Much prefer the gear lever and would buy the latter over the former by preference.

I prefer the rotary but the lever feels comfortable in the new Defender so can’t see it bothering me too much.

I’m used to using the “knob”, but a “stick” is more intuitive and most importantly more precise.

What other manufacturers followed JLR in replacing a stick with a knob?

What other makes don’t bother me tbh unless I am in the market for a replacement and decide NOT to buy JLR.

A gear stick is intrusive into an area you could do without it. Twiddling a gear selector is infinitely better than playing about with a gear stick, but as in all things, it’s down to personal preference.

99% of the time, you put it in drive and forget about it until you stop or reverse, so why make an issue out of it unless you use it as somewhere to rest you hand?

Several times I’ve been in D and when wanting to select R I’ve twisted the knob slightly too far and ended up in P.

More importantly perhaps, on safety grounds when requiring to hang on to gear for longer, I found it quicker to be able to flick the lever in the 6 speed D4 to the right to select S, which I could do with my hand rather than having to be more precise and use my fingers.

It’s not a big issue for me, but when the subject arises on a forum I’ll often comment and state my reasons why I prefer the more precise action of a stick.

Indeed it is.

As an exercise in interior design the “knob” is a triumph. I think it looks great and gives the illusion of greater space.

The reason it’s being dropped on some (all?) newer models is I believe due to the reasons I’ve stated.
