I've avoided petrol engines due to a renowned head gasket fault and whilst the 1.8 is underpowered the V6 is OTT. Also, auto gearbox in order to compensate for lack of low range 'box.
Thus losing all the real bargains 2007 Porsche Boxster (987) 2.7

As you said earlier Cy the whole petrol thing is totally subjective, I know of a couple of friends who both have/had the petrol engines last longer than the diesel ones.
Speaking to the missus she says that they see fairly equal numbers of both the petrol and diesel through the workshop and they both have there own faults. As you've also mentioned having spent the cash on the modus could keep it on the road for another year.
At the moment the person holding the £££ holds the upper hand so its up to you to find the deal and then go haggle for it If in doubt............flat out.
