Hi,
Im a novice at towing (just a couple of times so far with a car trailer) and now we are thinking of getting a general purpose small trailer for domestic duties and maybe a little holiday bagage transport. I had originally looked at the Erde range but the IW P5 looks better constructed. Has anyone experience of this model and towing it with their D3 or D4?
I read elsewhere that that someone had an issue with an IW trailer (not P5) being too low at the nose to correctly hitch to the removable tow bar in their D3. Any thoughts on this being a likely issue to consider as i have the non- adjustable tow bar.
Any other suggestions or recommendations for a small unbraked trailer suitable for such use?
Would like something very reliable and which will hold value.

I had an IW P6e and used it to move house 12 years ago and then for getting firewood every year, never had an issue towing it with the D3, which was a coiler with lift kit to raise it to same as off-road height.
Only issue I had was that it wasn't big enough for my needs so a couple years ago bought a much bigger IW GD85 twin axle, which is great, but I wouldn't recommend it for you level of use. How much smaller is the P5 than the P6e?
Oh, forgot to say, I use a removeable tow-bar, not the fixed type. Also if you are a novice, I'd recommend doing a basic course, it'll build up you confidence for when you need it

IW will always knock spots off an Erde. Personally wouldn't touch an Erde only to tow my lunch around in. Had a Wessex unbaked trailer years ago which was ok but still not an Ifor. Smaller Ifors are not built to the same heavy duty standard as the larger ones but still a good choice. Should be fine for what you're after and will fetch top money on Ebay all day long when you want to sell it.
If you want to practice reversing, see if you can borrow a big trailer, the bigger (longer & wider) the trailer is the easier it is to reverse IMHO. Takes longer for a larger twin axle trailer to change direction so gives you more time to adjust your steering. Learning to reverse with a tiny lighter trailer is harder for a beginner and generally puts people off. When practicing keep the Disco in low range, saves you riding the clutch too much and will limit your speed for you. 11 RR 4.4 TDV8

I've had an Ifor Williams P6e for about 11 years. Fantastic trailer. I tow behind my D3 with a removable tow ball and you just don't know it is there.
It is small enough to man-handle but large enough to cope with anything DIY/domestic - including 8 x 4 sheets of timber etc.
It has also got a ramp tailgate so I can get my ride on mower into it when I need to.

A single axle trailer is fine on d3 with detachable hitch, but if you use a twin axle ifor you may find the hitch too low.
As for reversing, Andy was spot on, the bigger the trailer the slower it reacts ! Take your time and practise !
It might be worth going for the P6e as they are generally easier to find and will always be easier to sell second-hand. That said,second-hand prices are often not far off new ,and there are deals to be done at this time of year so shop around.HTH

Yep, go with the Ifor, you can resell them all day.
My P6e also has a ramp for ease of loading things with wheels but more importantly, you can see the thing when reversing.
And get one with the monster wide wheels with a spare
Edit: No big wheels but looks like it might fit the bill for camping

I've got a IW P6e as well. Got to agree with everything that's been said.
I've got the ladder rack on the front, makes it a bit easier to see forwards or backwards.
Quad bike fits on it nicely.
Mine has taken some abuse over the years. Funny thing is, they go for more on ebay, than I paid for it new ! There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes.

Thanks for all the useful info guys . Looks like IW are a well respected brand and the additional cost of the P6e over the P5e is fairly negligible so worth considering.
Any sugestions as to where to buy and where might discount new?

i have the P6e and it is used regularly to cart rubbish to the dump etc. Brilliant and easy to reverse as you can see it, whereas the smaller cheap one I had before was awful as you couldnt see it out of any mirrors or over your shoulder!

Another vote for the IW P6E - I use mine form the trips to the tip etc but most importantly for my off road, power wheelchair. It's going to get tested next year on the LORAC trip to Croatia in May, then the Pyrenees in September
Might have to put some bigger wheels on it for that !

Paul, TH White at Arborfield are the dealers for your area, but I have never dealt with them so cant comment on price etc.Would suggest you ring a few dealers for prices and see if nearest to you will match lowest price.

Bigger the better, a small one is a lot more difficult to reverse.
I tow my racing car all over the place no bother but when I took a little trailer tent on holiday in the summer I couldn't even see it, pig to manoeuvre.
I've also made money on every Ifor trailer I've ever owned, they're a great investment.
