Ideas for Preventative Maintenance? |
|
Hello folks,
My D4 is just over 10 years old and has covered about 88k miles. It's only been mine for a few months but was my wife's for the previous 7 years and apart from suspension bushes, brake pads and a few headlight bulbs, it's been faultless. However, it's last MOT came with an advisory for rear brake pipes and suspension bushes again, and I've just removed and disposed of the side steps that had literally disintegrated through rust.
This got me thinking that perhaps it's time for some preventative maintenance beyond just servicing. Years ago, I owned a 300tdi Discovery and when it reached about 100k miles I treated it to a whole host of new ancillary parts such as hoses, water pump, lift pump, etc, and I'd like to do something similar now. The question is what, though? A D4 is a very different animal to a 300tdi D1 so what would people recommend fixing before it fails? And are there better options than like for like replacements?
All suggestions welcome. Darren

Rotted side steps = waxoil underneath ASAP! It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks. Despite searching, I hadn't found that one. Apart from rust proofing and rigorous servicing though, it didn't seem to reach any specific conclusions. Have you considered anything more in the intervening time?
I must confess I was expecting the worst when I removed the side steps but apart from a little surface rust where the brackets were fixed, they seem ok. I do plan to get the underside treated though, again via Chris who did a Defender for me a few years ago and which I was very pleased with. Darren
