Hi all
That time of year, my 2010 D4 XS FBH is refusing to fire up, removed cleaned as per Robbie’s post, (although not very sooty) refitted, 4c temp tonight, 1/2 tank of fuel, with gap tool primes (no faults), gap tool check FBH (no faults found) on timed climate and manual heat, makes all the noises but no smoke, no lockout, if I squirt a very small amount of carb cleaner into the air intake it fires up for a few seconds, is it possible that the fuel is not getting to the glow plug although the gap says it’s primed ?
All help appreciated. Discovery 3 SE gone but not forgotten.

The GAP prime function doesn't check whether the heater is actually getting fuel, it just runs the pump for x time or x cycles.
(As a aside you shouldn't prime a known working heater as you flood it with diesel and cause more problems).
Could be you're not getting fuel into the heater. You can remove the fuel pipe/rubber elbow at the heater and put it in a jar/cup. Then run the prime function, are you getting diesel through?
If not then listen out for the ticking of the pump during the prime function, if it is definitely ticking then it could be the line blocked something, usually between the tank and the pump. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

When you run the FBH on the GAP tool, how long does it fire for? I found I was able to increase the running period by repeating the GAP process and it went from perhaps a minute of smoke and noise up to the full 300 seconds that the tool maxes at, followed by a couple of minutes of run-on as the fan continues to run until it has cooled. After that it didn't fire up on its own at the first 2C morning, but did a couple of days later at 5C. Previously:

I don’t think the FBH is actually running, it makes noises but doesn’t fire. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Hi Worms
Running the FBH with the gap tool the FBH does not fire up, only when I introduce a very small amount of carb cleaner does it fire, so I presume the glow plug is working ?
Hi Martin
FBH does a full cycle lots of noise (like a jet turbine) runs down the will try again through the cycle, as said to Worms if I introduce carb cleaner it fires for a short time, no fault codes or lock out ?
I’m going to check if the dosing pump is pumping fuel, if not I will use air to blow through pipes and pump, if that does not produce fuel to the FBH I can only assume the pump is faulty, the vehicle has now done 160,000 miles so it’s done well. Discovery 3 SE gone but not forgotten.

If the pump isn't ticking, it's either failed, or the control wire from the FBH to the pump is broken.
If the pump is ticking, but there's no fuel getting through, either the feed pipe from tank (most likely) or from pump to FBH is blocked (less likely) - it's easy enough to clear both.
Detach both fuel hoses at the pump and one at the FBH, and blow through both with an airline (back into tank and up to FBH). 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Hi Martin
I’ve been at it for a few hours, (hadn't read your post), tested pump, pump is pulsing, no fuel to jar at FBH, removed pump, blew through from FBH to pump, blew
through to tank (couldn’t hear any bubbles sound from tank, removed fuel cap, good old hiss from tank, blew to the tank again, tried to blow through the dosing pump from FBH end no joy, reconnected all, man heat feed to FBH pipe into a jar, a very small amount of fuel (less than a teaspoon), reconnected pipe to FBH, run timed climate (5c temp) FBH did not fire up, I did listen to the dosing pump and it was pulsing 😩 Discovery 3 SE gone but not forgotten.

Hi all
Can anyone tell me if I disconnect the dosing pump from the tank and feed from a jar/bottle with diesel in it, would it have to be gravity fed or would the pump suck up the fuel, having read over my post I am of the opinion that the feed from the tank is blocked but want to prove it, also when feed from tank is disconnected should it leak fuel, at present it doesn’t, thanks. Hi all
Update, although the dosing pump pulses as if working I could not get enough fuel through to fire up the FBH, sourced a used pump (a lot cheaper than new and worth a punt) fitted last night, on timed climate this morning ha ho we have a working FBH, so pleased 👍 Discovery 3 SE gone but not forgotten.
