HELP - Engine is screaming at 2500 rpm

Guys,

I've had this problem for a while but my stealer is really having a hard time trying to find out where the problem lies Big Cry

They have changed the fan belt, fan belt pully (both were broken anyway), result; noise still there. They then changed the turbo, noise went away for about 12 hours then came back again, today they changed the EGR valves (which was a good idea as they were black and would have required changing soon anyway, so I'm told) Noise still there Big Cry

The noise (screaming sound) seems to be coming from the rear left of the engine bay, before you could only hear it under load but now rev it up to over 3000 rpm and there it is.

Could it be the high pressure fuel pump (operated by a belt) which I am told is located in that area that is the cause or could there be a gap in the exhaust system?

Any ideas Shocked

You say left rear of engine bay
The air con compressor is left front of the engine....

We've replaced a couple noisey air con compressors...mostly due to drivers who accidentally drove off road just the once in the vehicles lifetime Whistle Whistle

Excuse me for sounding simple, if it was the air con (god forbid I might have gone off roading once in my sleep Whistle ).
Would the noise stop if I turned it off and would it make a noise under load?

I thought there was a world wide recall on MY07+ high pressure fuel pumps? Noise is from same area.

Mine (old one Mr. Green ) required a new air con compressor due to a high pitched wine from the bearing on the pulley wheel. IIRC Made no difference if air con on or off. Initially noise was "felt" but below engine tone / pitch but soon got louder than the engine at idle Embarassed

Apparently I had used mine off-road too Whistle

caverD3; Never knew that, I'll get my stealer to check that on Monday.

The noise is coming from the rear left of the engine as you look at it from the front, otherwise it would be the rear right if we were talking about sitting in the car and facing forwards. Embarassed

Just thought I'd add that as I confused the long haired general last night as we talked about the car, although she is blond 8)

Car went into the stealer on Monday, got a phone call yesterday saying that they "think" they have found the problem Very Happy

The gasket which joins the down pipe from the exhaust manifold is blowing, although they said it could also be a crack in the manifold, they were taking it all to bits today so that they could order the correct parts. Smile

Anybody heard of this problem before?

I've never had that problem, Ian, because I've never taken my D3 off road. Whistle

Isn't 100 posts better known as a "microstone"? Whistle

That's great news Ian Thumbs Up

But I don't understand how this fault causad a screaming noise??

Could it be something to do with the turbo coming on-boost and bearing whine coming out of the hole in the gasket maybe??

So all this

They have changed the fan belt, fan belt pully (both were broken anyway), result; noise still there. for a faulty gasket Shocked

Heine; Yeah I know, tell me about it. The problem was that at first you couldn't hear the problem unless the car was on the move, so it sounded at the start as if the fan belt was slipping. As the hole in the gasket got bigger the sound became audible if you revved the car in park. This enabled the stealer too locate the problem, which I might add isn't easy as you can not see the down pipe gasket or manifold gasket without removing a lot from the engine bay and then you still need to use loads of mirrors to see the problem.

PaulP, the screaming noise, as I have explained above, was if the fan belt was slipping, you only heard if the engine was under load.

It's fixed and I'm glad as it was really starting to bug me. Thumbs Up
