I had similar on mine and think it was down to battery. At least thats what I told stealer when I dropped it in with the same symptoms. It only happens when cold though havent had the same issue so far this year. Might also be Glowplugs.
Hope that helps

Are you sure you waited for the yellow glowplug light to go out before starting the engine?
When its warm, the light can go out very quickly, but when its cold it can stay on for much longer.

This makes me wonder if you wait for the beep has the yellow glowplug light gone out by that stage.

And what is the beep you refer to ?
When I turn the ignition and my glow plug light goes out I never get a beep.
Is this something on earlier cars? My is an MY07

Yes Ian... only us 'oldies' have the beep.
Turn on the ignition, wait for glow plug light to go out... then once you have the beep it's all systems go!! As you slide down the banister of life

careful
my glowplug light stays on after the beep in really cold weather and the engine will not start. As soon as you release the key again the glowplug is straight back on again....wait until it goes out and she starts. end of an era ....... maybe a Defender when it appears.......

When its cold, the glow plug light can stay on well after 'System Check' bong that earlier cars have. If you are simply starting the engine upon hearing the bong, then the glow plugs may not be glowing enough.

Don't worry... I check for both the bong and the light going off... was only illustrating to Flinty that our older models had a bong!! As you slide down the banister of life
