Car was imported and sold by WR CAR Sales in Bradford.
Really, totally honest experience, I have nothing negative to say about them.
I did see a few cars at other dealers but this one was by far the best condition.

I would SO like to know if my 5L V8 D4 is or is not at high risk of an engine wreck due to failed chain tensioners. I've read that the tensioner design or material was uprated at some point for these engines because chains broke or came off.
Any pointer would be very welcome ?
My VIN is SALLAJAD3AA522101
Engine runs smoothly, slight ticking noise at idle, bit like the sound from a badly adjusted tappet on an old push-rod engine.
With my thanks

Land Rover did changed the tensioner and chain guide design around 2013-2014 but I don't thank that ever made it into the Disco production runs as the engine was discontinues on the Disco4 prior to that FWIK.
I've seen some mention that you could run a borescope down the oil fill opening to read the PN of the chain guide, but after being inside the front cover I'm really not sure how practical that would be.
https://www.rangerovers.net/threads/5-0l-t...od.335252/ A fairly simple way to tell is fish a bore cam through the oil fill spout towards either the LH guide or tensioner and hunt for the part number stamped on its side. You don't have to see all of it, just the starting two alpha characters. It they are not "FX" you have the old tensioners and guides
As you can see on my previous post, the chain guide on mine only had a small indent (maybe 2mm). I've seen much worse talked about, but my chain was certainly slack at TDC.
Here's a short clip of mine. You could hear the slap clearly with the engine idling.

The design change consists of a new chain guide with a steel butt where the tensioner piston locates against the guide, but more importantly there's a new tensioner with a wider piston end, and it sits at a slightly different angle. It looks to me to give improved push on the chain.
As to what fails? There's lots of info on the Jag forums where this engine is very well known. I don't think there's been any cases of actual chain snap, but you would start to see some timing codes from the ECU as the slackness increases. Could it jump a tooth? Maybe? There's cases where the chain slap has broken the chain oiler (which could well lead to a catastrophic failure).

Model year 2012 had some significant updates to tensioners i believe05 D3 V8 HSE, LR Passion tree bars, wildbear compressor guard, LRP switch panel, ARB rear locker + compressor, Trigger 6 shooter electrical system
12 RRS SDV6 HSE (Hers) - Gone and replaced with an I Pace - I can tell you now EV is not the future yet

Actually I don't think so. There was a post somewhere from a Land Rover tech talking about the rollout of the change into the factory. I think the new tensioner and guides might have been available sooner, but the factory cut in was much later. The 2014 Disco4 was no longer offered with the V8, hence I really don't think any production models had the new design!

BIG Thanks !!
Hi, just a mention of BIG thanks for several very valuable pointers above re. potential vulnerability of my 5L engine to timing chain malfunction.
Cheers, very grateful to all ))

I have a vague recollection the PN is different for guides and tensioner on a 2012 MY. I think that PN was an upgrade for pre MY2012. To be honest its a while since I looked at this as we were looking to buy a vehicle for a trip in the US in 2020 and then sell it afterward. I'll have to see if I've still got the info I was sent as it may have been on my work account at that time. They did say it wasn't a total fix but much better.
To be honest having spent years with Honda and BMW mototorbikes on the personal fleet I kind of view camchains and tensioners as consumable items anyway05 D3 V8 HSE, LR Passion tree bars, wildbear compressor guard, LRP switch panel, ARB rear locker + compressor, Trigger 6 shooter electrical system
