Thanks Del, I will look in to that.
My first 625 miles with the D3
100 miles it to France and bong……….” what’s wrong” bong again can’t find any warning lights but it keeps doing it for a couple of minutes …..until I realise that when I turn the radio down I can’t hear the bong. It was in the back ground of the French radio station. I realise that my paranoia about breaking down is taking over the journey and I need to calm down. For now that is true.
I am comparing the D3 to 4x4’s that I have had in the past. A new T spec 2006 Pathfinder and a 93 2.8 Pajero 10 years old at the time.
The bad
The Sat Nav…….I can’t believe they got away with this in the car. No blue tooth and phone connectivity. The Pathfinder had all of this in 2005.
Not a big problem for the drive down, I will use my Galaxy phone and plug it in to the Aux. That way I can listen to some tunes and use google Maps. It sits nicely in front of the Sat Nav. Almost made for it.
I put my charger in to the cigarette slot and now to find the Aux in………………..really in the back. Why?
No tunes just Google Maps then. Hence the annoying French radio station that sounds like a fault warning.
The good.
Well, the car grew on me.
I had ice cold air on my face and the heated seat on and apart from fuel stops I drove from 10:45pm until 4:00am. Not once did I feel uncomfortable. I had been up since 7:00 am, so I did start to feel that a snooze was in order. 2 hrs later, good to go.
More comfortable than the Pathfinder.
I drove down to France when we moved with the Pajero pulling a 2700kg load. The difference between the D3 with 3500kg behind it and the Pajero was night and day.
I put the cruise at 60 mph and not once did it struggle. It maintained that speed up all of the hills all of the time. Yep you know 3.5t is there and a bit of forward planning is needed when slowing down but I was impressed. It was almost too easy. I can imagine people forget that they have a caravan on the back. Showed 19.5 mpg over 625 miles, Dels post noted but my Pajero was 12 to 15 and not at 60 mph.
By far the best tow car that I have ever used.
The cabin is well insulated against road noise and was a pleasant place to be.
Apart from the SAT NAV
Once I found a decent radio station I thought the system sounded pretty good, though I lost the station after half an hour.
The UGLY
Well the driver’s side door won’t lock. The dealer should have dealt with this and is a known fault. Not the end of the world.
The dreaded TC issue. There just had to be something.
It started to judder when under load, this was more pronounced when pulling out of slip roads but progressed to when pulling away from the Petrol station and through Rouen. Mainly away from junctions.
It got worse and started to do it going up hills, it would do it when the revs were less than 2000 but stop as soon as it changed down a gear.
Apart from that and did I mention the SAT NAV. I really like it.
Have sent the garage an email about the TC and will wait to hear from them.
The real test will be when pulling the digger and trailer across sites in the mud. Of course if it gets stuck I just unload the digger or I could drive the digger to the trailer on the road. But where’s the fun in that?
I hope it didn’t bore you all and I hear there is a gearbox somewhere in Norway.

If you want a freshly refurbed gearbox I can give you the lat & long.
And yes the LR SatNag is truely pants, I use Google Maps instead.

The garage is going to talk to Broadfields about the TC. Hopefully they will it it sorted.
I don't have an owners manual so didn't realise that I can connect my Galaxy to the system. Have now searched through the forums so will try that tomorrow.
Just got to get my head around the posts on playing music from the same phone. I guess it is the same as the Ipod but it won't allow me to select tracks.
Lots of info here just hard to follow sometimes but getting there.
I am trying to keep the mods down, it is a slippery slope. But a set of off road wheels and tyres looks tempting......and a snorkel ....and a winch. These jobs sites get really wet and slippery you know. An honorable defeat is better than a dishonorable victory.” ― Millard Fillmore

And taking it back again
So the garage has asked me to take it back to England so Broadfields can resolve the problems. Good that they are supporting the car. Just such a shame that it is giving me such grief.
The three problems look to be
TC
A suspension issue
Front drivers door lock.
The latter I would do myself but the other two could be more serious and are for the dealer to do.
It has spoilt the whole experience now.
Today towing the digger the auto box was juddering all the way up to 30 mph and the red suspension light was on telling me not to go over 30.

Car going back to Broadfields to have a new TC, a new drivers door lock and the suspension sorted. All costs covered by supplying garage.
Talking to Broadfields they think the suspension issue is likely to be one of the ride height sensors. To be fair they haven't seen it yet. If one has gone are the rest likely to follow?
Are the fronts and backs the same and if they are, should I get some spare whilst in the UK?

In addition to the above post's problems the tail Gate won't open. The supplying garage has given me two options.
1) They will repair the above but that is the last warranty claim that I can make, as the car is 11 years old and I have to accept that there will be wear and tear. They will have spent around 2k on supporting it, so I get why.
2)They buy it back.
The first option has me concerned about what is next, or am I just unlucky in my first week of ownership?
If one ride sensor has gone will the rest quickly follow?
Two out of the five door locks have gone so are the rest likely to go? I think that I would want to change one of the rear locks where my daughter sits. Just to be safe.
And is this car too fragile to be a working car?
The second option is finding something else that will tow 3.5t. Within my 9k budget.
I had narrowed it down to the list below before going for the D3
Toyota Amazon LC......my budget only buys an old one.
Nissan 3.0 Patrol......only a manual gear box can tow 3.5t
Mercedes ML .......just doesn't do it for me.
Well I just don't know what to do. I really wanted the D3 to workout and would have been happy to try and keep on top of maintenence myself. I even brought the IID tool.
Edit: And Del''s blown engine got me looking into posts about that and ability or lack of to rebuild the bottom end.

I am close to keeping the D3 but before I finally make up my mind. I wanted to get an understanding of what the faults are on the IID tool.
I have the list in the previous post. Plus now the nearside rear door won't lock, so might as well do all five doors. And the sunroof won't open. Edit [tried woody''s recalibration, went through the cycle of opening and closing but still won't work normally. Did this three times]
I am guessing the suspension is sensors from reading other posts but that is a guess.
If the list below makes sense to you guys can you give me some pointers as to whether these are simple fixes or not.
My average fuel consumption not towing is 23 mpg that is on good French roads at a steady 60 mph.
• B1B02-28 (2F) Low frequency coil - General signal failure - signal bias level is out of range/zero adjustment failure
( at 195740 km )
• B1B70-01 (2E) Local interconnection network bus circuit 2 - General failure information - general electrical failure
( at 195740 km )
• B1C57-14 (6C) Passive start ignition relay coil circuit - General electrical failure - circuit short to ground or open

Cell Phone
• B1A00-47 (AF) Control module - System internal failure - watchdog/safety failure

Suspension
• C1A13-64 (2E) Pressure does not decrease when venting gallery - Algorithm based failure - signal plausibility failure
( at 195742 km )
Traffic Message
• B1A56-18 (2F) Antenna circuit - General electrical failure - circuit current below threshold
Or should I start a new thread for this, rather than continue with this thread?
Edit
Have been reading through lots of threads and will check my battery and alternator on Monday after work. Might be grasping at straws but at least it will tell me if I need to replace either.
Thanks

And charges at tick over at 14.49v
Am I right in thinking it needs a new battery?

IMO the battery should hold at mid to high 12's so I would be looking to replace. Cheers.

Had this on mine, new desiccant and filters in the dryer on the air suspension compressor solved it. kit was about £50 on ebay and that included a aluminium replacement cap for the plastic one that are known to split.==================================

Cheers, will look at a site sponsor for a new one.
The tail Gate and rear nearside door locks are working again now. Would the low battery make these play up or is it best to just change them?An honorable defeat is better than a dishonorable victory.” ― Millard Fillmore
