I’d start by checking your battery if it’s low it can do this,

Check and clean up the 2 earth terminals under driver side headlight, these are the ground points for more or less all elektronic related to gearbox and so on.
A lot of gremlins can appear if there is not proper ground.

Did this get fixed?

I have a 'gearbox fault' come up on on the dash after trying to select gear after start up, several times now.

Battery voltage is 12.2v after standing over night. I start the engine, then leave it a minute, then give it some revs, and I can get the gearbox to work. But its jerky in low gears. Any guesses?

76 k miles done, time for a gearbox oil change ....

This just started to happen after i had an intermediate (between services) oil change at kwik fit (I know I know), Could they possibly have drained the gearbox mistaking it for the engine sump? surely not....

Hi yes it was a low battery
Before I got it sorted out I would press start then I would 5/10 times get a click then the clock would goe to 12 o’clock and all my settings would go back to default ??
I just gave the D4 a good run to charge battery and it’s been ok since......

If the oil in the transmision is low the pressure inside won't be correct so the car won't select a gear and will show a fault.
The easiest way to determine this is to check the level, but you'll need a hand-held like a IcarsoftCR Pro or equivelent to check when fluid is at the correct temperature.

I reckon they let the apprentice loose on. It was perfect before it went in.

They'll deny all knowledge if i ask .

That sounds stressful.
It's not a difficult task to check, it just depends on how much you enjoy lying under your car when the ground is -7˚c and if you have the tools required I suppose.

Its witchcraft

Overnight charge on the little (0.8 Amp) Ctek and I have only 12.39V across the battery terminals, so the battery is probably bad.

But, gearbox has no problems at all. Wimbledon Automatics told me it does not sound like an oil problem, more like software... anyway now I'm sure its the battery. For the first time in a year the start/stop function started to work as well. Such a sensitive car! Put it back on the CTek.... its like intensive care.

12.39V doesn't sound bad to me, in the current temperatures, so keep charging it. The CTEK you've got is quite low powered, most here use a 5,7 10 or 25 amp, so it will probably take a while. Don't forget to connect negative lead up to chassis rather than direct to battery terminal (this ensures the battery management system knows about the charge you're adding).
Good luck

As you say,, they are very sensitive to battery issues. Mine needs regularly charging with low mileage at present. Sometimes I think I might as well have an electric car!
Cheers

Yes the charger is a mini one for my motorbike , I'll order a bigger Ctek one.

I moved the negative from the charger off the battery terminal and onto the bodywork earth clamp nearby. Thanks for that.

If I go for a new battery do people recommend AGM? personally i dont like them, I have had odyssey batteries for motorbikes and found them expensive, and crap.... cannot be recovered if they lose charge
