I'd recommend reading the T's & C's yourself in case I missed something (here), but I couldn't see anything against.

Just looked at what I think is his site (gapinsuranceuk) and the T's & C's excludes a 'Vehicle which has been modified in any way from the manufacturer's specification'. That seems a bit crazy - add a Blackvue or sump plate... but later it does say any modifications will be excluded from the purchase price for valuation. I'll send him a pm to ask for clarification.

I also looked at gap2go, but they exclude 'Vehicles used for ... off-road use...' so they are off the list (despite being very very cheap).

Kam has come back to me (via underwriter) and said that these modifications and 2nd battery are fine.

One thing concerns me still:

Quote:

Offer of Settlement:
If you accept an offer under Your Motor Insurance Policy of less than the current Insured Value of the insured Vehicle then We reserve the right to assess the loss at the current Insured Value.

This worries me slightly as you set the Insured Value at least at the market value at the point of taking out insurance; however insurers always pay out on current market value, which a whole year later on a new car will be significantly less - easily £5k or more.

GAP Insurance works very well in the event of a claim.
If your vehicle is stolen or written off, it is advised to first call the insurance company you are insured with, and then the GAP insurance claim line, the GAP will liaise with you and the insurance company and will help you to get a decent 'retail' insured value for your car as this will minimise the claim they will be liable for i.e. between that and invoice price/ insured value if on return to value.

The policies have in our experience never caused much of a problem on claiming, in our history i think we have only had 4/5 people claim and need the cover on theft/total write off on their vehicle, but they were all very much in pocket on the claim and it lightened the blow of losing their car..

If you want to have a look at the T&C's of our policies, you can view them on our website, we have dropped the prices to remain competitive in the market place literally last week..

Thanks for the shout out TC.. Thumbs Up

Not strictly an answer to the question but an observation from a owner perspective.

I had GAP on my last car and it got hit; Friday 13th, dark evening in February, narrow Norfolk road, by a young lady coming from the opposite direction, who lost it on a bend and ploughed into the front offside. Car was 2 years and 11 months old, written off due to front chassis and supension damage.

Aviva paid up within 4 weeks, GAP payment followed pretty swiftly after. Net result, got the full purchase price (less RFT etc) and spent many a happy hour looking around the showrooms knowing I'd got a wad full of cash awaiting the right vehicle.

Have I got GAP on my current car - you bet.

The best £300 I've ever spent

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I am waiting for my new D4. Next week I am told. Have thought about GAP insurance but find that my car insurance policy provides a new car in the first 12 months, so is GAP a waste of money in that 12 months? If yes can you get GAP after the 12 months? I have had quotes from £999 -- £139.

Yes a lot of insurers provide like for like on brand new/nearly new cars in the first year of insurance.
However GAP RTI has to be taken out usually within 3 months of purchase, so people miss out.

However on our policies, we can defer the start date for up to a year from the point of purchase, so if you buy a 3 year policy from us, you can defer the start for the initial year (if your insurer covers like for like in the first year) and then have a further 3 years with us.. and you can spread the cost 12 months interest free.. and if you sell the car within the term of cover, our policies are fully transferrable..

Any other questions, please let us know.
Quotes, T&C's available online: www.gapinsuranceuk.net

Cheers
Kam.

I'm back to square one - MHC's underwriter won't cover a vehicle that has any modifications that were not both manufactured by LR and fitted by a dealer nor if they were added after the point of sale Shocked

Even stuff as simple as a bolt-on sump guard or roof rack will invalidate your policy.

Pretty disappointing and illogical really.

I might be onto a winner with ALA.co.uk:

They only exclude vehicles used for 'any rally, competition or off-road vehicle of any type' - obviously that last bit needed clarification - I asked if a D4 fell under that categorisation:

Quote:
In regards to the classification this is referring to vehicles which are permanently off road which your vehicle isn’t I presume.

There is no exclusion in the T's & C's on actual use, therefore one can assume that casual off-road use if ok.

Regarding modifications...

Quote:
Modifications need to be mentioned on the policy but they do not preclude your vehicle from cover but the modifications themselves would be excluded assuming they are not main dealer fitted extras in which case up to £1500 worth would be covered.

I've just followed up with them and the overriding principle is that if your main insurer is ok with work you've had done then they will abide by that in the event of a claim.

WRT price - not too bad 4 years VRI+ worked out at £279.
