Just on the off chance............

Now we are into colder weather and the FBHs are firing up at less than 7°C outside ambient, are you getting fumes from that feeding back into the cabin? The exhaust outlet of the FBH is in the passenger wheel arch area.

I have an enclosed courtyard and on really cold mornings I would start the engine and then go for a coffee whilst everything defrosts, and the car definitely ingests some of its own fumes (which clear quickly as the journey got underway).

Just a thought, like I say I, have had this on many an occasion before now.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Good call PROFSR G if it still enters with the recirculate on it must entering the system elsewhere, I’ll try it and see, are there any known ‘leak’ issues with the exhaust system that I should start with?
AdamRandall id say yours is CAT related being the sulphur smell

Noticed recently my 2010 D4 exhaust fumes are getting stronger, anyone had experience of this or have any ideas what I should check? I use shell or BP diesel, just been serviced runs and drives fine small amount of smoke on start up but nothing when driving any ideas?

Don’t suppose anyone’s aware of an exhaust smoke test that I can carry out to see where the possible leak is?

I’ve just fired a smoke machine up the exhaust several times and let sit, topping up with blast of smoke every few minutes, no leaks spotted.
Did wonder if the smoke would disperse before it filled the system but when I removed the machine etc some smoke came back down the exhaust so think it’s an ‘ok’’ test
Anyone know how to test the crossover pipe?
Figured I could partially block the exhaust with it running and see if anything becomes apparent?!?

Update!
After crawling all over it the fumes appeared to be coming from the right (drivers) side after some detective work i found the EGR to exhaust pipe has a hole in it! Think I’ll need to remove the whole thing to get bolts out as the ones in the picture below won’t budge and feels like I’ll round them off even with an Allen key, does pose the question should I blank the egrs off? Guess I’d need to tell ecu they’re no longer there can I do that with the GAP tool?

Now getting what I think are exhaust fumes inside the cabin on start up and when sitting at idle, it’s stronger on start up
Does anyone have a layout for the air ducting? Figured I could look along it’s route for issues I’ve looked on lrcat but couldn’t find it

Im suffering exactly the same problem. Particularly strong exhaust fume smell on start up & idle. Did you ever identify the problem?

Laughing mine was the drivers side, diagnosed by a stronger smell in the wheel arch that side. I took the wheel off and removed some of the heat shielding to get to it, the pipe has further heat shielding that needs removing to get a good look
Good luck

Confirmed - holed pipe on drivers side. This rules it out for use on the family trip to England on Sat 😭

Hi Chaps, (Andyyav + swansty)

So then, with the hole in the EGR pipe, on the drivers side of both of your cars, this looks like it could be a common problem wouldn't you say?

I'm having the same symptoms as you both described.

Couple of questions...

Is there a quick and easy way for me to have a feel around and locate the pipe and feel for a suspected hole without taking half of the car apart (bearing in mind that it's -2 degrees outside?

How much did it cost or how /easy/difficult was it to have fixed?

Out of interest, what was the mileage on your cars at the time?

Thanks
Les

Evening Les

My mileage was roughly 130k from memory, checking the pipe isn’t to hard a job with the wheel off, once I’d got access by removing some heat shielding I could feel the hole through the ‘insulation’
Removing and replacing was a chore and took me a fair while, I think one of the fixings was a real PIA to get out and I ended up using a removal tool (below) I did try repairing mine with an exhaust bandage to buy some time but it didn’t last!
