Fuel tank protector

Hi all. Was under the car today and noticed that the fuel tank protection plate had some decent surface rust on it. Having just had some underbody paint delivered I decided to pop it off and give it a clean up and paint. All the bolts freed up lovely but as I undid the last couple of bolts and it started dropping I noticed (I think) the fuel tank coming with it so immediately bolted back up. Is this right? I would have thought the tank would be separately supported and the protection plate able to come
Off to allow access.

That is correct. That plate holds the tank in place Thumbs Up

Thanks DM, another masterpiece of LR design Smile
Is there enough slacking fuel lines etc to drop enough to get the plate off and support the tank with something?
Only filled up the other day so looks like another job on the pending list until I get the tank down near empty.

Yup, I replaced mine with a half full tank. I used web strapping to hold the tank up

I have changed the cradle leaving tank in place a few times. Best to have tank near empty. Fairly easy to drain fuel into a container using a bypass on pump solenoid.

I lower the cradle enough to fit three short pieces of drilled flat bar. This holds the tank seam front and side, then under filler neck at the rear.

A set of small ratchet straps will do it once you have burned off the fuel. When the level is low you can loosen the bolts just enough to allow you to prise up the tank and slip a small ratchet strap under both ends of the tank. You can anchor them around the chassis rails and tension them.

Once the tank is secured remove the bolts and drop the tray.

Don't forget the bolts on the top cover! Thumbs Up

Thanks all, sounds a pain but better than cleaning up and spraying the shield while on my back underneath Smile I’ll put it on my calendar for when the red light comes on.

Fuel Tank Protector

Hi

I knew there was surface rust on my protector plate but today when I went to clean it and paint it the surface rust turned out to penetrating rust and the mounting bracket disintegrated.

Can't weld a patch on as its too close to the fuel tank so a replacement is the best long term option.

Does anybody know the part number? Its not listed in my Britpart catalog?
Are any after market suppliers making them or is it an official JLR dealer only part?

Any advice welcome.

Cheers

Can you replace this without having to drop the tank? My understanding was that the guard was also the support for the tank….

If you can support the front and rear of the tank at the same time, you can remove the guard and refit without taking the tank right out

Tank Guard Type

Hi

It now seems that there are 2 versions of the tank guard for the Discovery 3?

I had thought all D3's had the same guard and the RR Sport a different type.

Apparantly LR fitted a modified tank which needed a slightly different tank guard.

Mine is a 2005 D3 which I have had since 2010.

Does WFN000014 seem correct?

Regards

That's the correct part no. for your 2005 model.

This link to LR parts shows the difference between the two types.
