I thought the ops method was to do the flush twice.
There is a level plug on the side of the gearbox. Allen key.
Must only be removed with engine running. (You can loosen it first )
Car on flat ground suspension high.
Take car for a 3 minute drive first to slightly warm fluid.
Fluid can be added thru level plug if no fluid trickles out.
Refit level plug before switching off engine else it will pour out.

Hi, when you use the pump out method, only 4L comes out at a time.... I did this successfully last year. First pump out 4L of old fluid into the catch tank/bucket, and then pump in 4L of fresh fluid. Start the car again and pump out another 4L of old and then pump in another 4L of fresh. Repeat again of you feel the need to.
I did mine last year, the old fluid was a dark red, so I know I got out around 9L in total. I filled with fresh Manol AG55 which is a clear light yellow fluid. I ran it for two weeks and then repeated the whole exercise, what came out the 2nd time was still clear and clean, so I'm happy it completely changed it all.

If there is not enough oil the thing simply will not work.
Iirc I got 7 litres last time I changed it using the pump out method, think I got 4 litres just draining it out of the sump.
Regardless how you do it you wil still need to check the level via the bung on the side of the box

Huge bump. Read through the whole thing and just had a question or two:
1. Obviously this has worked for everyone but my concern is running the engine to pump out the old fluid. No concern here with doing that and having no fluid in the transmission. No risk for damage here?
2. My plan is the following, can someone critique for me?
- Drain the pan first (leave for a few hrs)
- Hook up hoses to the radiator
- Run engine to pump out the remainder via the OP's method
- Close drain on pan
- Fill via the documented factory procedure of filling sump via fill hole under the car (would that be faster than via the cooler hose?), run engine, fill till spill at 40 deg C.
This is a 4.4 V8 LR3
Thanks!!

I would pump out first.
and then remove the sump plug to get the remainder out.
Regarding refilling, you can get more in thru the cooler hoses.
If you fill thru the side of the gear box, you need to put some in (till it spills), then start the engine, then put more in (till it spills) and put the plug in with the engine running still.
Not good with hot V8 exhausts

Thanks for the info!
I like to understand the mechanics behind things. Could you explain why you suggest pumping out first then sump drain?

you will never pump all the oil out, so you need to do a drain at the end.
As with your worry about the pump running dry, at least it will have pumped lots of oil thru it, before the oil runs out. Where as if the sump is already dry, it may struggle to pump the oil out.

Just want to log my experience for the record. Completed this 3 weeks ago.
Quite a simple process. Old fluid looked like hot chocolate shooting out of the hose. Happy to get some clean fluid in this for peace of mind. Don’t listen to the LR nonsense about being sealed for life. My fluid was DONE.
4.4L V8 LR3 with 120k miles.
4.5L out the first run. Added 2 Q via manual pump. Turned back on, 1.5 more out. Added 2 more. Turned back on and got 1.5 more out. Added 2 more via the cooler line. Went under and ended up needing to add 2 more from below via the fill hole to top off per the normal manual procedure.
In total, 8 qt (7.5L) out and 8 qt in.
Would highly recommend anyone do this if you plan to keep yours for very long. Spent $15 in hoses/bucket from Home Depot and $90 in Mercon SP from Rock Auto. I’m saving the materials and will repeat every 30k miles or so.

Also, just as a note. My fuel economy has improved significantly after this flush. Has anybody else noticed a change after doing this?

I think Sam (on YouTube) with a full sized RR noticed an improvement

Finally did mine today, very easy and pretty much mess free, only 3.75 litres came out with the engine running, 4 litres pumped back in sump to temp level checked good for another year
Last changed 2 yrs ago.
Getting the car level front to back and side to side was perhaps the hardest bit as I live on a hill!
Hi @Lynalldiscovery. How did you make sure the car was finally level please ?
I have a relatively flat driveway (Read road in front of house) , with a slight camber.
A couple of weeks back I was trying to get it 100% level for the fluid level check using spirit level gauges on top of the cup holders.
(Readings vary depending on where you place the spirit level)
LHS to RHS was fine , rear to front was showing a tad bit nose down, but since the spirit level was just ever so slighltly touching the limit , I didn't read too much into it.
Would putting the car into off road mode and checking ATF level through fill hole be an option, given as how the car auto levels itself ?
( Of course I will have some axle stands below just in case it decides to sit down)

Hi all,
Looking for some advice, I did Filos process today.
Pumped oil out of the cooler line with the engine running until it spluttered.
Then dropped the oil from the sump, both together measured 5L
Pumped 5L back in through the cooler with a weed sprayer.
Started engine and ran trans temp up to 30 degrees measured from my IID tool.
Then opened the fill plug (engine still running), and oil just poured out... didn't seem right so I just put it back in for now and gave up for the night.
Have I gone wrong somewhere in the process?
It seems to me like the transmission may have been overfilled in the first place?
Guess I'm just looking for reasurance that it's right that I let the oil drain from the fill plug until it stops, it just feels like I'm draining straight back out the oil I've put in and I'm worried I won't have ebough oil!

Sounds overfilled in the first place to me.
But you don’t want to waste oil

Did you follow procedure to hold gears for 3s to fill all solenoids?
If so then overfilled to start, make sure it's dead level when checking.

Yes I did way more than 3s in D & R, my drive is sloped upwards a tiny tiny bit but can't imagine that's enough to make it pour out the way it is doing.
Sounds like it must have been overfull in the first place then, I'll have to drain it out tomorrow.
