Feels like loss off power & free reving???

Hi everyone,

I have a D3 TDV6 06' Auto 79k miles.

My wife drives the car daily and said that there were occassions where there seemed to be a delay in power and then some free reving, I thought nothing of this and suspected it must be her imagination, but I felt it today.

I'll try to explain a little better.

When acclerating from standstill it appears to have a delay before it gets going, so you tend to press the accleartor pedal a little harder, then it gets going and is fine.

The other thing that happened was when I was reducing speed from around 35mph to about 5mph to turn a corner, then as I turner the corner and pressed the accelerator pedal the engine free revved before i assume engaging the gear and carrying on as normal.

Any ideas would be most welcome.

Thanks everyone.

i had this last week, £13 parts less than an hour to fix... spot on the same symptoms.......

The issue is you instictively give the gear lever a Censored and that puts it back into drive. Look at the D indicator on the dash..

Now its fixed it obvious that the gear selector has been a bit stiff for a while, try a different car to see if our is stiffer !!!

had the same, changed the pivot, no change, changed the complete auto gear selector and cable, no joy, changed the gearbox..... all fine.

If you think logically, the box has already come down or up the gears moments before the free revs and therefore the issue is one of having that power transfered into reality.... hence the torque converter showing signs of wear. Furthermore if you move the selector over to manual when this happens, then the gearbox behaves itself and will manually go up or down the gears and over to auto, therefore by implication cannot be assumed that it is the pivot at the end of the cable coz the cable has done the job in moving up the box have it be manually before going over to auto.

To best describe your issues, its like the car does not match the speed of the engine noise/effort on the gas pedal Neutral

For us it was always as we approached traffic lights that were red but soon to go green, you'd coast to around 5mph approaching the lights with the car going down the box to 1st without issue, then when increasing the speed high enough to ask the box to go from 1st to 2nd, it would free rev and not match the speed on the speedo until you moved it over to manual then across to auto after going up from 2nd to 3rd.

IMHO I would say its the torque converter within the gearbox, quite a few d3 owners are now experiencing the same symptoms and initially going down the pivot route only to find they are no further forward.

Others have had the time to have the torque converter replaced at cost of approx £1200 but for us it was a case of not wanting too much downtime as its a works vehicle so we bit the bullet and changed the complete box Big Cry

If you get 5 mins, give these guys a call for advice:

I'm not convinced that you have sorted the issue, give it a few weeks and I'm reasonably sure it will return but of course I could be wrong Whistle

sorry matey, seems to afflicting MY05/06 (mines 06), not heard of anyone with MY07/08 yet with the same issues...... but I'm sure they'll be along in a minute Rolling with laughter

this particular symptom of the Jag ZF gearbox is going to divide opinion in the same way as the "gearbox judder" does today with everyone jumping on the "double flush/power flush" band wagon (another one I fondly remember from personal experience only to find a year or so later it came back and stayed with is for another 3 years) Laughing

Thanks Character - I'm not mechanically minded, but I can see the logic of it being the Torque Converter. Where is the TC located?

brownieHSE, have you tried discomikey's solution yet?

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic31656.html

That's the first thing as it's the ,most common to cause the symptoms you are describing. Don't worry about Character, he's done over 400000 miles so has now had everything replaced Rolling with laughter Thumbs Up

oh yee of little faith....... Whistle

£5 says it will not fix it bodsy, couple of weeks and then back again. Laughing

BTW, the torque converters inside the gearbox, so complete box out job with around £600 labour and around the same for a new TC. Thumbs Up

Personally, I recon there ought to be a group buy of these things, what d'yer say TLO:rolllaugh:

I'd happily take your £5. It's classic symptom of the pivot. Nothing more sinister IMHO.
