You'd be amazed at the faults that are recorded by diagnostic systems on most modern cars. Don't let this phase you in any way.

May be as only started now it is cold, also both occasions it happened with in 400m of the house!
One other thing I have noticed is I always wait for the bong, BUT this dose not give the glow plugs long enough to heat up in the cold weather!
The bong has nothing to do with warming the plugs... its just a system check completed bong.

Hi,
This finally happened to me today (first time ever) only 400m or so from the house and was also promptly sorted out by a restart.
The funny thing is that it wasn't that cold this morning. It was only 0 degrees C whereas I have used the car at -5 on occasion.
I will see if it does it again before taking it in to the dealer.
Cheers

One of the causes of faults like this, is not a fault in the physical sense at all.
A suspension error, message about range change not being available and special programmes being off, can be caused by a simple "missing message" as the various control units boot up.
Think of it in the same way that Windows XP can start up perfectly normally, but for no obvious reason can fail to load some of the system tray icons......
This is why the "restart" often clears the errors, and everything gets back to normal. Now, what is not answered here is why the failure of the message transmission in the first instance.....I still consider that this is down to a voltage/electrical issue, which is exacerbated by cold ambient conditions.

If you really want to impress your dealer when you take in a car with a fault, such as that discussed in this thread, ask them if they would kindly check the configuration of the XY Switch.....
(and that doesn't mean playing a Coldplay CD)

Up date dealer kept it in over night, did nothing more than clear all faults & reset! 4 X A4 pages of them!! Said if it dose it again bring it in with out clearing the faults if possible, so they can hock it up with all the dash lights glowing! It has not done it again, yet! But it has not been very cold ether! D5 HSE Waitona Grey 2015

I realize this, but having had may diesel cars & vans I have always waited for the light to go out, especially when cold!
On the D3 I have got out of this practise as the light normally goes out B4 the bong! But when it is colder I noticed it was taking longer than the bong so I was having to look at the dash to see if the light had gone out! D5 HSE Waitona Grey 2015
