Essentials for off roading
Is there anything you'd consider an essential item for taking your D3 off road?
I don't mean the kit you put into your LR but the bits you'd wNt fitted to your car prior to getting carried away in the muck. I.e. Sump guards, Rock slider etc.

basics would be in my opinion good suited tyres and at least sump guard
han you can go further with rock sliders or tree sliders, full underside protection, winches and all like proper mud rubber
than you'd have to start thinking of second mortgage
Plus whatever personal protection you might need for the BT moments... The older I get, the better I was.

I'd say the most important items in order are:
1. A Brain, not joking just that no matter what kit you have if you don't use this there'll be trouble
2. A wingman, never go venturing off road as a single vehicle
3. Good tyres, even road tyres in good condition, the Disco takes a lot to get stuck
4. Sump Guard
5. Sill guards

I'd say;
1. Off Road Driver Training specific to the D3 (i.e. not just basic training but gaining knowledge of D3 electronics)
2. At least AT Tyres
3. Sump Guard

If you just want to start off and enjoy driving around some lanes etc, then I think I would say that just item 4 (from CFB's list) is necessary as well as being the most important thing...
You should never go anywhere without the means to be pulled out of a hole or mud - and don't ever trust other peoples equipment unless you have no other choice...they're cheap enough and last a long time if well maintained.
Driver training is a great idea, but if you've got a rough idea of how things work, you could always do this when you start getting a little bit more adventurous with your routes. (obviously if you can do it first, then all the better).
Sump plates and A/T tyres are great for when you start getting into things a lot more....we've done plenty of routes that are somewhat intimidating for first-time drivers, but in reality they were able to cope easily with standard road tyres.2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

Indirectly would mean a method to encourage a similar outcome...Like saying "if you type "pink feather duster " into google , it's the third result on the list" or "I could tell you but I can't, nudge nudge wink wink whistle"
TBH I don't know why people can't just live with it ...there was a nasty divorce and thats the end of it..... simple as.

Thanks for all the advice guys.
PaulP had it right I think I shall be starting with some gentle lanes to build up a bit of confidence before trying anything too crazy.
I think a sump guard would be a wise investment. And obviously a decent quality rope or two with suitable shackles. until I can afford/justify a winch.'05 D3 HSE, Logic 7, fridge, 4x4info, and more to come!
