Wading plugs and breathing pipes |
|
Can anyone tell me if these are necessary / advisable? If so, recommendations for a supplier?

I think inspector71 is talking about breather pipes / plugs - not whether the vehicle will let in water.
the diffs, and gearbox + LR fitted winch, all have beather pipes already fitted - well mine (an 06HSE) does Duncan

Thanks one and all.
It's good to know that, provided I don't open a door, or go in anything deeper than 60cm, I should be ok. And make sure that when my TDS Goldfish winch gets fitted, it gets a breather pipe like the LR one. And that the D3 hasn't the holes of a Defender ... but not necessarily the wading ability either, that is up to the windscreen. Or is that a fabulous photo just before the Defender drowns and we miss the less photogenic tow home?
I'm curious about any breather pipes already fitted to our glorious machines. I've seen photos of Defenders with breather pipes run up the side of their RAIs. We know our Discoverys benefit from RAIs - but where do our breathers vent to?
Or am I so green and naive to the car and offroading that I'm just exhausting us with hot air? (Sorry, I should have resisted.)

The original question from the link was as to the need for wading plugs as per Defeners.
As usual thought he replies went a little off topic!
I don't think you'd want to go much deeper than the recommended depth with all the electronics on board anyway. (moving with bow wave gives a bit more leeway) Club N.E.R.D.s

Sorry, I didnt see any ref to defenders !
wading limit is 700mm but with a good bow wave this can be quite a bit more. Ive been in water over 1m. you wouldnt want to stop though Duncan

The front/centre breather pipes come to around the height of the top of the engine; front diff breather is between coolant bottle and radiator ( and should have the new style vent/filter top fitted to it as the old one used to melt itself sealed or something like that); transmission/gearbox breathers come up behind the engine somewhere (still haven't spotted the bu99ers!) and I think the rear diff breather comes into the car somewhere at the back, probably in the left hand cubby hole/tow bar storage area but again I haven't spotted it yet. At some stage when life seems too long, we can organize a task force to track down and document all these little breathers (pipes).
A Haynes manual might not have got to these but an official workshop manual, like I had for my now deceased Lotus Elan, would have had schematics and what-not. Ah, the stuff of nostalgia.

You could always immerse the D3 and look for the bubbles like fixing an inner tube! Club N.E.R.D.s
