Engine systems failure - in France on way on hols |
|
Hi all, we'd done almost 1000 fault free miles when a bleep came from the dash along with the red triangle and "engine systems failure" to cut a long story short the issue cost over 1500 euros in tow fees, accommodation, car hire etc to ensure our holiday wasn't ruined. The disco was eventually seen by LR in Le Pontet near Orange - they were great, fixed it in literally 2 minutes - apparently only needed a software update?????? No way I'm STILL thinking? We are now back in uk after driving another 1600 fault free miles. I'm livid to say the least. Id love some recompense from LR - any chances? Who is the best person to write to with the full story?
Thanks all

You need to start with your dealer I suppose. I would expect you will get your out of pocket expenses back, but if its compensation your after, then that might be difficult. Start talking to LRCS, but some say its like talking to god.

Really? You drove in Europe without having some sort of breakdown cover that would handle this? Frankly, that's your problem. Cars break down - it happens to all of them.
A few years back, our E Class Merc broke down on the Eurotunnel while we were driving to Poland. Yes, it broke down in the train on the tunnel. We had an AA European Five Star policy, and Mercedes own assistance package (which automatically covers MB cars up to 10 years old - LR should learn from that!). Between them, those two covered the costs of:
- hire car to Paris airport
- hotel night in Paris
- flights to Warsaw for the five of us
- hire car in Warsaw for the two week duration of our stay
- flights back to Paris
- hotel in Paris
- hire car back to Calais
We picked up our repaired car and went home with it. Total cost to us? Only the cost of the repair at the dealer near Calais (some 500 euro as I recall - but it would have cost the same or more to repair it at my specialist in the UK).
This year we took our LR out for a trip around Europe. We're currently in Italy, having passed through France, Belgium, Holland, Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia and Austria - still on the route are Switzerland and back through France. We have AA european five star cover and we have LR Assistance. The LR Assistance guys have been invaluable with the issues we've been having (not their fault that the LR dealer in Rome needs 2 days to get parts so they can't fix it). If things do break down horribly, I trust that the two packages will between them cover everything we need for it not to ruin our holiday.

Also, I'd suggest that it probably didn't need a "software update" but rather the fault codes clearing. Get yourself an IIDTool (I paid under £250 delivered) and you can read and clear fault codes yourself, as well as view live diagnostic data and make changes to the car's configuration...

I didn't say we weren't insured.
I'm shocked in reality there wasn't anything apparently wrong with the car

In which case you didn't have to pay the 1500 Euro. Your post implied that you did (otherwise why would you complain that it cost so much?). Since you're not out of pocket, no harm no foul I guess. I'm glad you were able to complete your holiday despite the problems

Yes, as Russell said, if you have LRA they would have come out to you and done what needed to be done by the roadside. Did you call them, or are you out of warranty? PAGODA

didnt think to ring LRA, just rang the breakdown company. The dealer advised the fault was a required software update, do you think this is spurious and i need to get it checked at LR in the uk? the car was fine on the 1600 miles home......

As others have mentioned, software update was probably just clearing the fault code in the system and then restarting. They do just glitch sometimes. I had this happen to me once in the uk (albeit the amber warning not red stop so I limped home). If you call out LRA, which is actually outsourced to the AA in the UK anyway, the Assist guys carry the LR diagnostic kit anyway and can usually do it on the spot. If the LRA operator offers you the AA because they can come quicker, it's worth checking how long before proper LRA can get to you because AA vans don't have LR diagnostic kit and then you just end up waiting for the recovery service anyway.
Always worth going with LRA first though because of above. And Im sort of wondering why anyone would buy another European breakdown policy. It's sort of like buying two lots of travel insurance...
Like others here I then got a black box FCR and, as I knew would be the case have never needed it since but it sits I the cubby box just in case... And we also regularly do 2-3000 miles down through France.
If you are concerned, might be worth asking the dealer to check the software version and see if it was really updated.

I have just had this fault, phoned LR Assist who arranged for a tow truck to collect us, back home now, my car is at a compound to be taken to Matford Land Rover tomorrow morning, hoping it is the same solution to the problem and I don't have to drive the Kia Sorento I have been promised will be delivered tomorrow for too long. Car is still under warranty, only had it a couple of months so don't expect there to be any cost from LR, but got to say I am disappointed. D4 SDV6 Landmark LE

Ok Matford Land Rover were great had the car for a few hours, updated the software and the fault has now gone and more to the point covered under the LR warranty. Time will tell if it's a long term fix - fingers crossed. Not so good was that the rear drivers side door paint had been damaged, suspect by the recovery company, again Matford were great, repaired while I waited, one cuppa later & job done!
