Prudential Tailgate Lock Replacement/Modification for D4?

A friend has just had the tailgate lock fail on his D3. Luckily his dogs were not in the dog box at the time but it still proved very difficult to access the tailgate for repair - luckily the garage employed a lithe and nimble young chap who, in earlier times, would have been sent up chimneys!
I have an even larger box in the back of my D4 which does have a rear emergency exit courtesy of K9 but am still wondering whether to take prudential action to prevent the same happening to me as I cannot see how the box could come out through the doors without the aid of a hacksaw!

I suppose what I need to know is whether the D4 mechanism has been improved so that failure is less likely? Anyone know please? If not what sort of lifespan does the lock mechanism seem to have? - my pal's D3 failed at 8 years approx.

I believe there is an improved part available though I'm not sure when it was introduced.

If you're concerned you can always fit an emergency release (as I have done) which allows you to manually operate the tailgate from inside the boot. Mine was fashioned from a couple of cable ties and some strimmer wire. Heath and Robinson do spring to mind but it works!

Take a look here for details: Emergency Tailgate Release
