Engine rebuild needed

So, I took my Discovery 3 2.7 (I had it recovered) into the garage I use (they only do these) and they have said the oil pump broke which made the cam belt break which has damaged the engine and so I now need an engine rebuild. She is an 07 plate, I bought her September 2019 for £5.5k. Suspension system literally blew up 6 weeks later so I paid £2k to have that fixed. Now this. Since February 2020 she has refused to DRIVE when in DRIVE 3 times, the last time saying Transmission Fault, limited gears available but if I put her into P then into D she is then ok.
Question is: repair or scrap. I really don’t want to scrap because all of my adult life I’ve wanted a Discovery but are these huge repairs going to keep on happening or has the worse now happened? At what point ought I to throw the towel in???

Sorry to hear this. Financially putting another engine in isn’t economical to do. Will cost more than the value of the car. But depends on how much you want a Disco ? D4 are now less than £10k so could be worth trying to scrap what it left of yours (and I am afraid it won’t be much) and put this into another D4 or a well maintained D3. Mine did the same, ended up moving away from JLR in the end.

Not sure what was wrong with your suspension that caused a 2k bill unless while they were fixing one part they found other bits broken in the past that had not been noticed, I can't think of any suspension component replacement that should come to that sort of figure!

Anyway, to your current situation, the transmission fault is not going to be related to the engine failure, so you are looking at two faults. If it were one or the other or you wanted to do it yourself as a project then it may be worth going for it, but to be honest with the cost of a gearbox overhaul AND an engine rebuild if it were my car I would call it a day. If you have the space/time/tools you could get a fair bit of money for parts (especially all your new suspension bits).

LizzK - Welcome.

Sorry to heard of your problems.

If you decide to rebuild, or fit a rebuilt engine, please don't go for the cheapest solution, you risk being in the same position again.

I suggest you read these threads, and others on similar topics:-

A factory recon engine is around £7.5k by the time its fitted

Comes with a nationwide, unlimited mile, 2 year warranty

While not cheap, it certainly gives peace of mind

A cheaper option would be a 2nd hand lump out a Jag, but they seem to be getting scarce now, as rust, and Disco owners kill them off Laughing

It is entirely possible your engine is repairable, but its a lot of cost to find out the engine is scrap anyway. Last one I stripped was around 12 hours labour, plus oil pump/belt kit/cam cap bolts all replaced, to find out the cam lobes had spun. Another £600 on cams plus labour to replace, customer threw in the towel at that point

The best thing to do is to sell it on here for someone to fix or break. Should get £2K+
So don't let a local scrap yard give you less.

If you are mad enough to get another, avoid 2007 models are they are particularly prone to this problem

Pete K is, of course, correct, but if you were to acquire such a vehicle I trust you would immediately have the belts done & fit a new oil pump, unless there was evidence that this had already been done.

Moo too is dead right - beware of cowboys, there are lots out there.

But that's another £500? on top of the purchase price?

What he is saying is that you should either buy one having had the belts done, or knock the £500 off to get them done ASAP.

MHO...

What is economical.... nobody knows the real answer as you never know what you get if you buy another disco (either 3 or 4), love in the end is never economical 😎
Regarding interior, specs, suspension, body, colour, you know what you have.. (If your suspension for 2k is all new) If this is what you like best (specs, colour, etc.) why not give it a new hart... ?

I blew my engine of a low milage D3 (100 miles genuine!) after 60 mls of ownership... I did choose for “refurbishing” an allready low milage JAG engine (68k miles) with new bearings, big-ends, etc. Etc. (there is a topic from me about it), new Torq converter, new oil filter on auto box, new turbo, new aircon pump, etc.

Now i have D3 which is sooooo smooth, powerfull, quiet, with no serious issues, with still low milage in its history and sounds, ride’s and feels like it will stay for quite a few years from now...

I am quite sure that the same amount of money i spent on the engine and work, never bought me the same quality and such a young engine If i just bought another Discovery...

Time will tell..

So it comes to you're budget and emotions I think...

I do not know how far you are from disco mickey, but could be a good idea to ask him if i want to do the job. I am quite sure, reading what he does and has done technically that you end up with at least a reliable D3.. the most important thing from what i read from you...
 Best regards
Harold
