Changing belts - oil pump and other advice |
|
Hi, apologies for the new topic as I know this is covered in many posts, but I am struggling to find a definitive answer for my model year.
I have an 06/6A VIN with 135K miles and I do not know what state the belts are in, so they are next on my todo list.
AF do a nice kit of for the cam and fuel pump belts and tensioner, so I was going to order that, but have a few questions.
1. I believe 06/6A should be the good oil pump design, but should it be changed regardless of design or is it sufficient to just double check its the correct design when I get everything open?
2. Might as well do the aux belt at the same time. Do I need to order any tensioners/bolts as well?
3. I have seen mention of changing the water pump since everything is off, its a fairly cheap part, but is this prone to failure/worth doing?
Thanks in advance

1. No it has not! Maybe some previous owner changed it.. but from factory buildt the my06 does not have the reinforced pump...
2. Always order and mount Complete kits,! Incl rollers and tensioners.. (fuel pump, cambelt and auxiliary belts, although the last is sold separately)
3. Yes, do it.... if it seizes, it wil ruin the rest there and big chance your engine in the end..
Do not buy brandless cheap stuff
Dayco for the belt kits... fomoco for the pump and OEM or SKF for the waterpump..
Also new bolts for the tensioners (all of them) check also the bearings from the tensioners (All of them!) and if suspect buy new tensioners Best regards

Change the water pump at the same time, its only a 5 min job when doing the front belt.

Cheers for the advice - its a bit frustrating that you can't really tell which pump you have until you are halfway through the belts. I think I will go for the approach of ordering everything, and best case if the oil pump is the right design and looks new(ish) I should be able to return the parts I don't use.

best guess.... the old pump is still there ... if some-one did the effort to replace it, he/she would have mentioned it somewere service books/invoice/etc.. because that is a "asset" and sells a motor better to people who know...
after 33 years in the engine trade: if some one say it is done, i still check it myself, if and how they done such things and if there is no mention of it, it is almost never done (but sometimes you are or can be lucky)
same with cam belts, etc.. i ALWAYS change them, seen to many short cuts etc. ( no new rollers, no new bolts, no new tensioners, etc.. even from reputable workshops.... you never know what the customer demanded (just before selling it etc.) even seen logbooks with (added) info regarding belts and pumps etc.. but when calling the workshop who signed it, there was no mention of it in their logs/invoices...
so a (afterwards) modified log.... Best regards

Motolab - that's the exact approach I was going to take with the belts, for the effort of getting to them to check them properly, they may as well be changed so that they are known to be good.
What is the oil loss like when changing the pump? - from the instructions it doesn't seem like it will be significant, but I have new oil and filter ready waiting to go in - so it is an option for me to drain the oil before tackling the pump.

there is zero oil loss.
Oil change is only really required if you drop rubbish into the sump.
In some respects leaving the old filter in and fully primed with oil maybe a benefit when first starting with the new pump.
P.S Water pump is driven from the auxiliary belt

Fitted from late 2008 but some Discoverys sat around in dealerships before being registered so the only way to tell is to look, if in doubt change it anyway a new pump should give you better oil pressure anyway
